Kankaria Lakefront Draws Over 6.72 Lakh Visitors, Showcasing Gujarat’s Tourism Potential

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ahmedabad’s Kankaria Lakefront has emerged as one of Gujarat’s most visited urban tourism destinations, attracting more than 6.72 lakh visitors during the summer season. According to data released by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the iconic lakefront recorded a footfall of 6,72,785 visitors between April 27 and June 3, underscoring its popularity among residents and tourists alike.

The impressive turnout comes as Gujarat prepares to host the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) for the Central Gujarat region on June 29 and 30 in Vadodara. Tourism and culture have been identified as key sectors for driving regional economic growth, with Kankaria Lakefront frequently cited as a successful example of tourism-led urban development.

From Historic Lake to Modern Tourist Landmark

Located in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area, Kankaria Lake has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Once known primarily for its historical and architectural significance, the site was redeveloped between 2005 and 2008 into a modern public space featuring recreational, cultural and entertainment facilities.

The revamped lakefront was inaugurated on December 25, 2008, when Narendra Modi was serving as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Since then, the destination has evolved into one of the city’s most recognisable attractions, drawing visitors from across Gujarat and other parts of India.

The lakefront now hosts a variety of attractions, public events and recreational activities, making it a popular destination for families, students and tourists throughout the year.

Economic Benefits Extend Beyond Tourism

The steady stream of visitors has generated significant economic benefits for Ahmedabad. Increased tourist spending has supported businesses in the hospitality, food and retail sectors while creating employment opportunities for local residents.

Industry observers note that successful tourism projects often produce a multiplier effect, encouraging investment in surrounding neighbourhoods and improving public infrastructure. Kankaria Lakefront is widely regarded as a case study in how urban redevelopment can contribute to both economic growth and community engagement.

Model for Future Development

As Gujarat seeks to strengthen its tourism ecosystem, Kankaria Lakefront is expected to feature prominently in discussions surrounding future tourism and cultural initiatives.

Officials believe the project demonstrates how strategic investments in public infrastructure can enhance city branding, attract visitors and generate long-term economic value. With visitor numbers continuing to remain strong, Kankaria Lakefront stands as one of Gujarat’s most successful examples of tourism-driven urban transformation.
