JioStar Takes Legal Action Against Zee Over Alleged Unauthorised Film Broadcasts

The CSR Journal Magazine

JioStar, the media joint venture between Reliance Industries and Walt Disney, has filed a lawsuit against Zee Entertainment, claiming that the latter unlawfully broadcast Bollywood films that JioStar holds the rights to. This legal move was initiated on May 4, 2026, and marks a significant development in an ongoing dispute between two of India’s largest media firms. The conflict has escalated into a wider legal battle, which includes a separate $1 billion arbitration case linked to a cricket rights agreement that collapsed in London.

According to official documents examined by Reuters, JioStar has accused Zee of airing 12 different films nearly 20 times between 2025 and 2026, all without the requisite broadcasting rights. The films in question feature prominent Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan, highlighting the case’s significance in both the legal and entertainment sectors.

Contained within a 120-page filing, JioStar has characterised Zee as a “habitual infringer,” alleging a persistent pattern of unauthorised broadcasting and exploitation of films that JioStar reportedly controls. This lawsuit was not previously reported, adding an element of intrigue to the already tense situation.

Ongoing Mediation and Previous Legal Disputes

The case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, which focuses on mediation and dispute resolution. Sources indicated that Zee has been summoned to appear before this committee on May 25, 2026. Should Zee fail to show up, it may be regarded as non-compliance with the mediation process.

This lawsuit from JioStar follows closely on the heels of a complaint from Zee against JioStar filed in April 2026. In its own suit, Zee accuses JioStar of using copyrighted music without proper authorization, claiming that some licensing agreements have purportedly expired. Zee is reportedly seeking damages amounting to around $3 million in this particular case.

Legal documents reveal that prior to reaching the current mediation stage, both companies exchanged numerous legal notices and correspondence dating back to February 2026. This ongoing back-and-forth has heightened tensions between the two firms and illustrates the increasingly confrontational atmosphere in the industry.

Industry Implications and Future Prospects

The legal conflict underscores the intensifying competition within India’s booming media and entertainment landscape, where multiple players are fiercely vying for content rights, advertising revenue, and audience engagement. In addition to the film dispute, there are broader issues at stake concerning the management and distribution of intellectual property in the sector.

Among the films mentioned in JioStar’s complaint are classic titles such as Deewaar and Tridev, alongside Aamir Khan’s blockbuster Dangal. While JioStar has lodged several allegations, Zee has reportedly countered some of these claims by asserting that it had acquired the necessary permissions from the relevant production entities to air Dangal.

The legal battles between these media titans reflect not only their individual interests but also the strategic manoeuvrings of larger trends within the industry. As JioStar potentially seeks damages exceeding Rs 250 crore in the ongoing film dispute, the outcome may set significant precedents for future engagements in India’s media sector. Both parties continue to refrain from commenting publicly on the matter, leaving observers awaiting the next developments in this unfolding saga.
