Jeffrey Sachs Urges China To Back India’s Permanent UN Security Council Seat

The CSR Journal Magazine

American economist Jeffrey Sachs has backed India’s bid for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, urging China to support New Delhi’s inclusion as part of a broader reform of global governance.

Speaking at CNN-News18’s BRICS Dialogues, Sachs said India and China shared fundamental interests in building a multipolar world and should work towards resolving their differences rather than allowing their long-running boundary dispute to prevent greater cooperation.

Sachs Calls For China-India Cooperation

Sachs said India and China, which together account for about 38 per cent of the world’s population, had a shared interest in moving away from a world dominated by the United States.

Referring to the origins of the boundary dispute, he said, “China and India have the biggest shared interests in moving from a US-dominated world to a multipolar world. The fact that they are divided because a Mr McMahon in 1914, using the authority of the British Raj, drew a line in the Himalayas, thereby creating a century-long conflict, is not a good reason for both countries to continue to be divided when their fundamental interests all call for resolution.”

Sachs said the two countries should take on a greater global leadership role together and work towards what he described as a peaceful multilateral world.

He argued that the 21st century should not remain dominated by the United States and said India and China, as the world’s two most populous major powers, should work together to shape a multipolar global order.

Support For India’s Permanent Security Council Seat

Sachs urged Beijing to back India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, describing such a move as being in China’s own interests.

“I urge that China support India as the sixth permanent member of the UN Security Council. I think that is in China’s interests. I also advocate for India to make suitable amends with China, because your common interests are very strong.”

He also cautioned India against being “played” by the United States through the Quad grouping.

Instead, Sachs said India and China should strengthen BRICS and position the grouping as a stronger voice for multipolarity in global affairs.

Sachs Criticises US Role In Global Affairs

Sachs also criticised the United States over rising tensions in different parts of the world, accusing Washington of seeking to maintain global dominance and acting as the sole superpower.

He compared the United States’ approach to that of the “British Empire of the 19th century” and alleged that Washington violated international norms and relied on unilateral sanctions.

Sachs argued that the era of US dominance was coming to an end despite the policies and actions of the current Trump administration.

“We have the technologies that we need. We can be safe and secure, and not be in war with each other. However, the mentality of one country to be the hegemon and others should be the followers is the one that is out of date. It dominated the British Raj for a long time in India. It should be put to rest,” Sachs said.

Call For A Multipolar Global Order

The economist said countries already possessed the technological capabilities needed to ensure security and development without pursuing conflict.

He argued that the idea of a single country acting as a global hegemon, with other nations expected to follow its lead, was no longer suited to the present international order.

Sachs said stronger cooperation between India and China, along with a more influential BRICS grouping, could help advance a multipolar and multilateral world order.

His remarks placed the reform of global governance, India’s bid for a permanent Security Council seat and closer engagement between Asia’s two largest powers at the centre of his vision for the future international order.
