India Advises Nationals In France To Avoid Protest Sites Amid Unrest

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has urged its nationals living in or travelling to France to exercise caution amid continuing protests, violent clashes and localised curfews in parts of the country. The Embassy of India in France has advised citizens to stay away from large gatherings and areas witnessing demonstrations, while following instructions issued by local authorities.

The advisory, issued on Wednesday, comes as unrest over school conditions and the rising cost of living has spread across France, with reports of looting, arson and confrontations between protesters and police. Authorities have introduced restrictions in several locations, while further demonstrations and a nationwide strike are planned.

Embassy Advises Indians To Monitor Official Updates

In its advisory, the Indian Embassy said: “In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution.”

Indian nationals have also been asked to keep track of local news and updates published on the French government’s official website, gouvernement.fr. The embassy advised them to check for possible disruptions to public transport through the website of RATP, the operator serving the Paris region.

Those requiring assistance in an emergency can contact the Embassy of India in Paris or the Consulate General of India in Marseille, according to the advisory.

Protests Escalate Over Schools And Cost Of Living

The unrest began in late September with student demonstrations over conditions in high schools, including overcrowded classrooms and concerns about inadequate facilities. The protests subsequently broadened into a wider movement against inflation, rising living costs and concerns about public services.

Demonstrations have been accompanied by incidents of vandalism, looting, arson and clashes with police. Localised curfews and restrictions on gatherings have been introduced in parts of Paris and cities including Lille, Lyon, Nice and Marseille.

Media reports said more than 2,400 people were arrested during the weekend unrest, while nearly 1,000 police officers were injured. French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to prevent a recurrence of the violence as authorities prepare for further demonstrations.

Fresh Demonstrations And Strikes Expected

Student groups and the Yellow Vest movement have called for rallies on Saturday, October 24. The Yellow Vest protests, which began in 2018 over fuel prices and later expanded to broader economic grievances, have again become part of the current mobilisation.

Trade unions have also announced a strike for November 5 over the cost of living and reductions in public services. The planned actions have added to concerns about possible disruption to transport and daily activities.

Against this backdrop, Indian authorities have asked nationals in France to remain alert, avoid protest-affected areas and follow official instructions. Travellers have also been advised to monitor local developments and transport updates as the situation evolves.
