Steve Smith Becomes Fifth-Fastest to Score 11,000 Test Runs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Steve Smith, the renowned Australian cricketer, reached a significant career milestone on October 21, 2026, becoming the third Australian and the twelfth player globally to accumulate 11,000 runs in Test cricket. This achievement occurred during the second Test match against South Africa at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. Smith scored 28 runs off 88 balls, including two boundaries, before being dismissed by Wiaan Mulder.

Smith’s 11,000 runs came in 226 innings, making him the fifth-fastest player to reach this landmark in the history of Test cricket. The record for the quickest to this milestone is held by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who achieved it in just 208 innings, followed by West Indies legend Brian Lara with 213 innings.

In the context of Australian cricket, Smith now joins the ranks of former captains Ricky Ponting and Allan Border in the exclusive 11,000-run club. Ponting leads the list of Australian run-scorers with 13,378 runs, while Border concluded his career with 11,174 runs. Notably, Ponting reached the milestone in 222 innings, while India’s Sachin Tendulkar needed 223 innings to do so.

Smith’s Position Among Cricketing Greats

With his achievement, Smith surpasses other notable players such as Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis, both of whom required 234 innings to reach 11,000 runs. This milestone further cements Smith’s reputation as one of the leading batsmen of his generation in the longest format of the game.

The list of players who have reached 11,000 Test runs in the fewest innings includes: Kumar Sangakkara (208), Brian Lara (213), Ricky Ponting (222), Sachin Tendulkar (223), Steve Smith (226), and both Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis (234). Smith’s consistent performance has been a key element of Australia’s batting line-up over the years.

As he continues to play, Smith’s contributions to the team will be closely watched, especially as he aims to further enhance his records in international cricket. His ability to perform under pressure has made him a pivotal player for Australia.

Australia’s Struggles in the Second Test

Despite Smith’s personal achievement, the day proved challenging for the Australian team, which was bowled out for a mere 99 runs in their first innings. South Africa, having posted a commanding total, took full advantage of the situation. Marco Jansen was instrumental in dismantling the Australian batting order, claiming five wickets, while Mulder took two, including the crucial wicket of Smith.

South Africa’s innings was bolstered by captain Temba Bavuma, who scored an impressive 179 runs, supported by Jansen’s contribution of 85 runs. The hosts managed to recover from an early collapse, establishing a substantial first-innings lead. Following this, South Africa enforced the follow-on, placing Australia under significant pressure in the ongoing Test match.

The current series has highlighted the competitive nature of Test cricket, with both teams striving for dominance. As the match progresses, the focus will remain on how Australia responds to the pressure and whether Smith can continue to build on his remarkable career achievements.
