The controversy surrounding singer Daler Mehndi’s performance at a cultural event in Uttarakhand has escalated, with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The film and television workers’ body has expressed concern over the singer’s public reprimand by state Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal, urging authorities to treat artistes with greater sensitivity and professionalism.
FWICE Seeks Intervention from PM Modi
In its letter, FWICE described the incident as distressing for the entertainment industry and emphasised that concerns about an artiste’s performance or physical condition should be handled discreetly. The organisation acknowledged the importance of maintaining discipline at public events but said that publicly confronting a performer was not an appropriate way to address such issues.
The federation also highlighted Mehndi’s contribution to Indian music, noting that his songs and performances have earned him recognition across generations. It appealed to the Prime Minister and the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to advise public representatives and event organisers to ensure respectful treatment of artistes.
What Happened at the Uttarakhand Event?
The controversy erupted during Mehndi’s performance at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in the Narendra Nagar area of Uttarakhand. During the programme, Uniyal reportedly walked onto the stage and questioned the singer’s ability to perform.
The minister expressed displeasure over the performance and questioned whether Mehndi was singing live or relying on a recorded voice. He also raised concerns about the singer’s physical condition. A video of the exchange subsequently circulated widely on social media, triggering debate about the incident and the conduct of public representatives towards performers.
Uniyal later alleged that Mehndi appeared disoriented and was lip-syncing instead of singing live. He also reportedly stated that the singer had been paid ₹35 lakh for the performance, arguing that audiences expected a performance befitting an artiste of his stature.
FWICE Cites Singer’s Health Concerns
In its communication, FWICE pointed out that Mehndi had reportedly been dealing with health-related difficulties and recovering from surgery. The organisation urged people not to draw conclusions about an individual’s condition without considering the circumstances.
The federation also disputed allegations concerning alcohol consumption, stating in its letter that Mehndi was not a consumer of alcohol. It stressed that any concerns about a performer’s well-being should be addressed with compassion, restraint and professionalism.
Mika Singh and Other Celebrities Extend Support
Singer Mika Singh, Mehndi’s younger brother, came out in support of the veteran performer following the controversy. He referred to his brother’s recent surgery and ongoing recovery while criticising the manner in which the situation was handled.
Actor Anupam Kher also expressed concern over the incident, maintaining that any disagreement could have been addressed privately and respectfully. Singer Sona Mohapatra, meanwhile, raised the question of performers’ responsibilities towards audiences while also questioning the public humiliation of an artiste.
Debate Over Respect and Professional Responsibility
The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the relationship between performers, event organisers and public representatives. While audiences expect artistes to deliver performances that meet professional standards, industry representatives argue that concerns should be addressed without compromising an individual’s dignity.
With FWICE seeking intervention from the Centre and the Uttarakhand government, the controversy has brought renewed attention to the need for professional conduct, sensitivity and accountability at public events.
