Sony has unveiled its latest microphone, the ECM-AX10, aimed at enhancing audio quality for smartphone videos. This device is designed to assist creators in capturing sound from various directions while adding spatial audio to their recordings. The microphone connects directly to compatible smartphones and includes features tailored for recording and editing on the go.

Features and Capabilities of the ECM-AX10

The Sony ECM-AX10 is a lightweight microphone, weighing approximately 24 grams, making it convenient for travel and outdoor filming. It connects to smartphones via a USB-C port, catering specifically to vloggers, mobile filmmakers, and other content creators who rely on their phones for video production. Unlike traditional directional microphones that focus on sound from a single direction, the ECM-AX10 employs four built-in omnidirectional microphone capsules. This design allows it to capture audio from multiple angles, thereby enhancing the overall sound experience.

According to Sony, the microphone’s spatial audio processing capability enables it to not only record sound but also to provide information about the direction and distance of the audio source. This feature is particularly beneficial for recording ambient sounds during street performances, sports events, travel videos, and similar scenarios where the surrounding audio plays a significant role in the viewer’s experience. However, the quality of the recordings can be influenced by the environment, playback devices, and editing techniques used.

The ECM-AX10 supports three distinct recording modes: ambisonics, binaural, and stereo. Each mode serves a unique purpose. Ambisonics is designed for spatial audio production, while binaural recording offers a three-dimensional listening experience when using headphones. In contrast, stereo recording provides a familiar format suitable for everyday videos and social media content. The ambisonics mode integrates with Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app, which allows creators to record, review, edit, and export videos featuring spatial audio directly from their smartphones.

Integration and Collaboration

Sony has developed the ECM-AX10 in collaboration with Sony PCL, its post-production subsidiary, which has extensive experience in producing content and spatial audio experiences. The microphone is also the first to receive certification from Eclipsa Audio, an open spatial audio technology aimed at delivering a more immersive listening experience across various supported devices, including compatible televisions and soundbars. This certification underscores the microphone’s commitment to providing high-quality audio experiences.

The binaural recording mode employs Sony’s spatial audio technology, similar to that used in 360 Reality Audio. This mode creates a three-dimensional sound experience when listened to through headphones. The microphone is compatible with general recording and video applications, as well as Sony’s dedicated apps. This compatibility offers creators flexibility in how they choose to record their content, although the spatial audio workflow is primarily reliant on the Spatial Audio Video Tool app.

Pricing and Availability in India

The Sony ECM-AX10 is priced at ₹17,990 in India and is available in a sleek black finish. According to Sony’s announcement, the microphone will be accessible through various e-commerce platforms, selected Sony Centres, and professional audio retailers starting from 21 October 2026. This launch aims to provide creators with a portable solution for enhancing the audio quality of their smartphone videos without the need for bulky recording equipment.
