Osho’s Philosophy Challenges Conventional Views on Success and Desire

The CSR Journal Magazine

Osho’s philosophy presents a unique viewpoint on the nature of desire and its impact on personal fulfilment. He posited that the quest for happiness often leads individuals into a never-ending cycle of wanting more. According to Osho, the essence of desire lies in the longing for what one does not possess, creating a perpetual state of dissatisfaction. This perspective suggests that even after achieving significant milestones, such as promotions or acquiring material possessions, individuals may still feel incomplete.

Osho, born Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Jain in 1931, was an influential Indian spiritual teacher. His teachings focused on meditation, awareness, and the exploration of human behaviour. Despite his passing in 1990, his ideas continue to resonate, prompting individuals to reflect on their beliefs and motivations rather than adhering to societal expectations.

Ma Dhyan Prachi, a meditation facilitator at Osho Dham in New Delhi, emphasises the importance of examining the desires that drive one’s pursuits. She encourages individuals to recognise whether their relentless chase for more is hindering their ability to appreciate their current circumstances. Osho’s teachings do not dismiss ambition but rather invite a reassessment of the expectations tied to achievements.

The Illusion of Fulfilment Through Achievement

In a talk delivered in Pune in February 1976, Osho addressed the feeling of being trapped in an unfulfilling routine. He likened this experience to an ox walking in circles, illustrating how relentless effort does not guarantee satisfaction. Osho used the metaphor of Alice, who runs towards a tree that never seems to get closer, highlighting that mere striving does not necessarily lead to fulfilment.

This sense of dissatisfaction often drives individuals to set larger goals or seek entirely new purposes. Some may even abandon successful careers for altruistic endeavours, hoping to find peace in a different direction. However, Osho’s perspective suggests that merely changing one’s focus may not suffice if the underlying urge to chase remains unaddressed.

Osho’s teachings encourage individuals to find contentment without renouncing ambition or withdrawing from daily life. He questioned the societal emphasis placed on wealth and possessions as measures of success, advocating for a more introspective approach to personal worth.

Finding Inner Peace Through Meditation

According to Osho, true contentment does not necessitate the abandonment of personal goals or material comforts. Instead, he urged individuals to assess whether their ambitions align with their desired way of life. Contentment is about recognising when the pursuit of future achievements overshadows the appreciation of the present moment.

Osho famously stated, “One reaches within by stopping, not by running,” encapsulating his approach to inner peace. This philosophy encourages individuals to pause and reflect rather than continuously search for external validation. Meditation, as described by Osho, does not require the elimination of thoughts but rather involves observing them without judgement.

Regular meditation practice can help individuals identify patterns in their responses to stress and ambition. Osho Dham offers various meditation techniques aimed at fostering self-awareness and relaxation, allowing practitioners to engage with their inner selves meaningfully.

Ultimately, Osho’s teachings serve as a reminder that the pursuit of success and the experience of inner peace may not always align. Individuals can explore their definitions of fulfilment without sacrificing their ambitions or material possessions, leading to a more balanced approach to life.
