Indian Innovator Secures ₹33 Crore Deal on Shark Tank USA for Polygons spoon

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rahul Agarwal, a 33-year-old designer from Kolkata, has gained international recognition for his innovative creation, the Polygons spoon. This unique kitchen tool resembles a flat, 0.1-inch bookmark but can be transformed into a teaspoon, tablespoon, or a precise measuring spoon. The design, inspired by origami, has impressed both investors and viewers alike, leading to significant financial backing.

Agarwal’s journey to Shark Tank USA began in June, where he successfully secured a deal worth $3.5 million, approximately ₹33.03 crore. His pitch, which showcased the versatility and functionality of the Polygons spoon, went viral after the episode aired last week, amassing over 1.5 million views. The spoon is made from food-grade thermoplastic and hydrophobic silicone, featuring small magnets that allow it to fold seamlessly.

The product has not only highlighted Agarwal’s design skills but has also brought attention to the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, where he completed his studies. His innovative approach to a common kitchen item has sparked interest in both the culinary and design communities.

Challenges in Development

Developing the Polygons spoon was no easy feat for Agarwal. He recalls a senior at NID advising him against redesigning objects that were already considered perfect, using the spoon as an example. This challenge motivated Agarwal to pursue his vision, despite having no cooking experience. He remarked, “Ego, it turns out, is the second mother of invention.”

The initial prototype, made from paper and plastic, took just three days to create. However, the process of developing a durable, washable, and manufacturable version took three years. Agarwal underwent over 1,000 iterations of the design, changed manufacturers seven times, and made 16 trips to China before producing a single unit ready for market.

These challenges underscored the complexities involved in bringing a new product to life, especially in a competitive market. Agarwal’s persistence and dedication to refining his design ultimately led to a successful outcome on Shark Tank USA.

Preparation for the Pitch

Preparing for the pitch on Shark Tank USA required significant effort from Agarwal. He dedicated time to studying successful television demonstrations, including notable products like Scrub Daddy and Slap Chop. This research helped him understand the nuances of effectively presenting a product to potential investors.

When he received the call to shoot the episode, Agarwal was on vacation with his family. He spent a considerable portion of his holiday in a hotel room, meticulously writing and rewriting his pitch script. This commitment to preparation reflects his determination to make a lasting impression on the investors.

Agarwal’s experience on Shark Tank USA serves as an inspiring example for aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators. His journey highlights the importance of resilience, creativity, and thorough preparation in achieving success in the competitive world of product development and investment.
