Nishad Kumar Wins Two Gold Medals at Asian Para Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

Nishad Kumar’s family anticipated his participation in the high jump at the Asian Para Games, expecting him to defend his gold medal. However, when the announcement was made for the men’s T47 long jump, it took them by surprise, as well as many others. Only a select few, including family and coaching staff, were aware of his decision to compete in the long jump. In a remarkable turn of events, Nishad excelled in this unfamiliar territory, securing gold in his first major long jump competition.

The following day, he added a second gold medal to his collection by achieving a leap of 2.04m in the T47 high jump, successfully defending his title and setting a new Games record. This unexpected success was largely attributed to a strategic shift necessitated by an ongoing knee injury.

Injury and Strategic Decisions

Nishad’s knee has been a concern for over a year, which compelled him to ease his training regimen. In an interview following his double gold medal triumph, he elaborated on how the injury influenced his decision to try long jump. He noted that the technique for high jump, requiring a lean at 60 degrees, exacerbated his knee pain. He had participated in only two high jump competitions earlier in the season, indicating a shift in focus towards long jump.

His participation in the Muscat Open, an able-bodied event held in September 2026, served as a crucial test for both disciplines. Although he finished fourth in high jump and fifth in long jump, these results provided insights into his potential while prioritising his health leading up to the Asian Para Games.

The gold medal in long jump on October 19 validated his decision to switch events. Despite limited recent experience in long jump, Nishad’s performance showcased his adaptability and skill, culminating in a significant achievement.

Path to Success and Personal Challenges

Nishad Kumar’s journey to becoming a two-time Paralympic silver medallist and Asian Para Games champion began in Baduan village, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district. Born in October 1999, his life took a drastic turn at the age of six when an accident on the family farm resulted in the amputation of his right arm below the elbow. Despite this setback, Nishad’s passion for sports flourished, inspired by the sight of Army personnel running in his locality.

Recognising his potential, his parents enrolled him at the Panchkula Sports Complex in Haryana in 2016, where he trained under coach Naseem Ahmad. This marked a significant transition for Nishad, who arrived at the training centre with minimal resources but a strong determination to succeed. He recalled the early days of training, which involved significant sacrifices and a commitment to his athletic development.

Over the years, Nishad has established himself as one of India’s leading para-athletes, winning multiple medals at prestigious events. His recent performances in Japan may also open opportunities for him to compete in both events at the upcoming Los Angeles Paralympics, contingent on his preparation and fitness.

Connection to Home and Future Aspirations

Despite his global achievements, Nishad maintains a strong connection to his roots. After winning a medal at the Paris Paralympics, he chose to buy a gift for his father, a farmer, opting for a large torch to assist with nighttime farm checks. With his recent victories in Japan, he humorously noted that he would be bringing home two gold medals instead of another torch.

Nishad’s story is one of resilience and determination, reflecting his gratitude for the opportunities he has received. He acknowledges the challenges he has faced but emphasises the positive outcomes that have emerged from his journey. As he continues to excel in his sport, Nishad Kumar remains a symbol of inspiration for many aspiring athletes.
