Ireland Script History With 34-Run Win Over India In First T20I At Belfast

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ireland registered their first-ever victory over India in international cricket with a comprehensive 34-run win in the opening T20I of the two-match series at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Friday. After posting 182/9 in 20 overs, the hosts bowled India out for 148 in 18.5 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Ireland Recover from Early Setbacks to Post 182

Asked to bat first, Ireland suffered an early wobble as Ross Adair, Harry Tector and Tim Tector all departed inside the first four overs, leaving the hosts at 30/3. Harshit Rana struck twice while Arshdeep Singh removed Harry Tector to put India firmly on top in the powerplay.

Captain Lorcan Tucker steadied the innings with a composed 50 from 36 balls before Gareth Delany took charge in the closing stages. Delany remained unbeaten on 49 off 31 deliveries, while George Dockrell chipped in with a brisk 19 from just 10 balls. Ireland’s late surge was aided by an expensive final spell from Prasidh Krishna, who conceded 57 runs in his four overs, including a 27-run 17th over that shifted the momentum decisively in the hosts’ favour. Ireland eventually finished on 182/9, a total that proved well above par on the surface. Harshit Rana was India’s standout bowler with three wickets, while Shivam Dube and Axar Patel claimed one apiece.

India Fail to Build Partnerships in Chase

India’s reply never gathered sustained momentum as regular wickets prevented any meaningful partnership from developing. Ireland’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and capitalised on the pressure created by the required run rate. The visitors lost wickets at crucial intervals and were unable to recover despite a few individual contributions from the middle order.

Ireland’s varied bowling attack shared the workload effectively, with Matthew Humphreys leading the way with three wickets. Debutant Jai Moondra, the Rajasthan-born left-arm seamer representing Ireland, impressed with two wickets, while the remaining bowlers chipped in to keep India under constant pressure. India were eventually dismissed for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing Ireland a memorable 34-run victory and their maiden win over India in any format.

Delany Stars as Ireland Take Series Lead

Gareth Delany was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 49 and decisive finishing role that lifted Ireland to a match-winning total before the bowlers completed the job. The victory gives Ireland a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and marks one of the biggest results in the country’s cricket history.

The second and final T20I between the two sides will be played in Belfast on June 28, where India will look to level the series. Following the Ireland assignment, India will travel to England for a five-match T20I series, while Ireland are next scheduled to continue their home international commitments after concluding the series against India.
