Coach Backs Sanju Samson, Warns Against Knee-Jerk Team Changes

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has cautioned the Indian cricket team management against making hasty line-up changes to reinstate Sanju Samson. Nayar specifically mentioned that Samson should only be recalled if there is a clear opportunity for him to bat in the top three order. This advice comes in light of India’s disappointing performance, having suffered a heavy 125-run defeat to England in the third match of the ongoing five-match T20I series.

Nayar noted that since Samson was excluded from the playing XI for the second T20I in Manchester, he has only managed to score six runs in total over three matches, including two losses against Ireland. His omission is particularly striking given his previous accolade as the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup only months prior.

The ex-coach highlighted that rushing to include Samson in the middle order could prove counterproductive, as he has not typically excelled in that role. According to Nayar, in order to maximise Samson’s potential, he should ideally open or bat among the top three, where his statistics reflect greater success.

Tilak Varma’s Performance Under Scrutiny

Tilak Varma, who was appointed vice-captain after the T20 World Cup, has struggled during the ongoing UK tour. Despite a notable performance where he scored 56 runs off 45 balls, he has been unable to pass the 20-run mark in his other five innings. In the recent match, he was dismissed for a mere three runs off 11 balls, unable to provide significant support to the team.

Varma’s situation is further complicated as he has played out of position since the T20 World Cup. Initially a natural No. 3 batter, he was shifted down the order to accommodate Ishan Kishan at the top, which may have disrupted his rhythm. Nayar has urged the management not to rush to judgment, suggesting that the root causes of India’s performance issues lie in their assessment of pitch conditions in England and Ireland.

The lack of adaptability to local conditions has been cited as a central issue, with Nayar referring to the team’s struggles in adjusting their batting approach. He stated that the inability to correctly gauge the playing surfaces has hampered their success, which is evident in their ongoing losing streak.

Management Acknowledges Need for Improvement

Head coach Gautam Gambhir also addressed the team’s performance woes following the defeat in Nottingham, admitting that their failure to adapt to varying cricketing conditions has been detrimental. He stated that if the team had managed to adjust their strategies better, they might not have experienced such a sequence of losses.

Gambhir’s remarks indicated a need for reflection within the team management regarding how they approach different pitches. The coach reaffirmed that improvement is necessary across the board in order to recover from recent setbacks and focus on building a more cohesive team structure moving forward.

Both Nayar and Gambhir emphasised the importance of strategic planning and proper positioning of players to optimise individual performances. As the team faces increasing pressure, the focus remains on recalibrating strategies to improve results in the remaining matches of the series.
