Iran Seizes Merchant Ships in Strait of Hormuz, India-Bound Vessel Among Those Targeted

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran reportedly seized two merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, including one that was destined for India. This event occurred on April 22, 2026, and has attracted significant attention, particularly due to its timing amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.

A video claimed to depict the seizure surfaced shortly after the incident, allegedly showing masked Iranian commandos boarding the ships. The propaganda video follows a series of escalations involving maritime operations in the region, including the recent actions of US Marines against Iranian vessels.

The tanker identified as Epaminondas was navigating towards Mundra Port in Gujarat, India, from Dubai when it was taken by the Iranian navy. The other vessel, MSC Francesca, was flagged by Panama and reportedly seized while positioned six miles off the Iranian coast.

Details of the Seizure

The Iranian commandos, said to be part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were shown in the footage pursuing the ships using speedboats. Initial reports describe the commandos as having entered the vessels under aggressive circumstances, utilising rifles and other weapons during the operation.

As depicted in the video, Iranian soldiers climbed aboard the MSC Francesca and conducted searches throughout the ship. The Epaminondas also faced scrutiny, with the soldiers reportedly inspecting the engine room while armed.

The capture of the ships, particularly the Epaminondas, resulted in damage to its bridge after the Iranian troops opened fire and launched grenades from their boats. Fortunately, crew members on both vessels reportedly did not sustain any injuries during the encounter.

International Reactions and Context

This seizure follows a period of heightened military activity in the region, where tensions between Iran and various western nations have intensified. The Iranian navy’s recent actions were perceived as a direct challenge amidst US claims regarding the diminished capacity of the Iranian military.

Days prior, US Marines had conducted operations to seize two Iranian-owned cargo vessels attempting to breach blockades in the same maritime area. Officials indicated that such responses were part of a broader strategy to maintain order and prevent further Iranian aggression.

The underlying implications of these operations highlight ongoing regional conflicts, with both sides engaging in a series of provocations that contribute to an increasingly volatile atmosphere in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global trade.
