Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will proudly lead India during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 23. This distinguished role adds another prestigious milestone to their already remarkable careers. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officially announced on Saturday that these accomplished athletes will carry the national flag and perform the duties of baton bearers at the OVO Hydro venue, marking the beginning of India’s journey in this multi-sport event.

Recognition of Athletic Excellence

PT Usha, president of the IOA, expressed pride in the appointment of Chanu and Borgohain, emphasizing the significance of their roles at the event. She conveyed well wishes for both athletes and the entire Indian contingent, which comprises 126 members. This recognition underscores their continued excellence on global sporting platforms, reflecting their dedication and achievements in their respective sports.

Mirabai Chanu, a weightlifter, achieved silver in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming only the second Indian to secure an Olympic medal in weightlifting. Concurrently, Lovlina Borgohain made history by earning a bronze medal in boxing, positioning herself as the third Indian boxer to achieve such Olympic success. Their accomplishments not only elevate their individual standings but also contribute significantly to India’s reputation in the sports arena.

Chanu has a distinguished Commonwealth Games history, having secured gold medals at both the 2022 Birmingham Games and the 2018 Gold Coast Games. She has also experienced success on the world stage, winning gold at the 2017 World Championships, alongside multiple podium finishes in subsequent events. After narrowly missing a medal at the Paris Olympics, Chanu approaches Glasgow with renewed determination to reclaim her position at the pinnacle of her sport.

Plans and Aspirations for the Glasgow Games

Lovlina Borgohain, hailing from Assam, has showcased an impressive trajectory in her athletic career. Transitioning from kickboxing to boxing at a young age, she has rapidly ascended within her sport. Since her Olympic success in Tokyo, Borgohain has attained gold at the 2023 World Championships and silver at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. As she prepares for her first Commonwealth Games, Borgohain views the upcoming competition as an ideal opportunity to enhance her already outstanding collection of accolades.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, will gather athletes from various Commonwealth countries for one of the year’s largest sporting events. With Chanu and Borgohain being the prominent figures leading the Indian contingent, the campaign commences with an inspiring representation of the nation’s sporting prowess.

The participation of these two athletes not only embodies their individual achievements but also serves as an inspiration to younger generations of Indian athletes. As the nation’s hopes rest upon their capable shoulders, both Chanu and Borgohain are set to make their mark in Glasgow, further solidifying their legacies in Indian sports history.
