The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian team for the forthcoming FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup has been announced, revealing no significant changes to the roster. The selection committee has retained the same 20-player squad that will also participate in the Asian Games later this year. Captain Salima Tete leads this well-established group as they prepare for challenges ahead.

Head coach Sjoerd Marijne has expressed his confidence in the players selected, describing them as a balanced mix of experience and youthful energy. The World Cup is scheduled to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30, with the team looking to make a strong impression.

“The selected players are well-prepared for the substantial challenges this summer,” Marijne stated in a press release from Hockey India. “The team has worked diligently leading up to the tournament, and we trust in their capabilities,” he added.

Training and Preparation for the Upcoming Tournament

Currently, the squad is engaged in a national training camp located in Bengaluru, following a successful outing in recent international competitions. Their preparations come on the heels of an impressive run in the FIH Nations Cup, which took place in New Zealand, where India demonstrated strong performances and went undefeated to claim the title.

“Competing against the top teams globally is an exciting prospect for us, and we aim to showcase our skills on such a prominent platform,” Marijne noted about the upcoming World Cup.

Two goalkeepers, veteran Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam, will share the goalkeeping duties. The defensive unit will feature players including Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Lalthantluangi, Jyoti, and Shilpi Dabas, aiming to provide a robust backline.

India’s Group Stage Matches and Expectations

India has been drawn in Pool D for the World Cup, where they will compete against China, England, and South Africa. All group-stage matches are set to be played at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The team’s campaign will kick off with a match against China on August 16, followed by games against South Africa on August 18 and England on August 20.

In the midfield, Salima Tete will guide the team alongside Nikki Pradhan, Sakshi Rana, Sunelita Toppo, Neha, and Deepika Soreng. The forward line comprises Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Navneet Kaur, Deepika, Ishika, Baljeet Kaur, and Beauty Dungdung, all looking to make an impact in front of the goal.

With the team maintaining continuity by retaining a largely unchanged squad, expectations are high for their performance in the World Cup. The players and coaching staff remain focused on their objectives, aiming for a noteworthy outcome in the tournament.
