Iran Suspends Ceasefire Pacts and Warns US of “Unforgettable Lessons”

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s supreme leader conveyed a stern warning on Saturday, stating that the United States would confront “unforgettable lessons” if it persisted with its attacks on Iran. The declaration was made as hostilities continued, resulting in renewed strikes targeting both military and civilian infrastructure. The leader also denounced US President Donald Trump’s signature as “worthless and invalid,” reflecting escalating tensions.

This warning followed comments from an Iranian negotiator who announced that Tehran was suspending its commitments relating to an interim agreement signed approximately a month prior. This agreement aimed to establish a permanent cessation of hostilities, which has now been severely undermined as the conflict rages on.

The situation has escalated significantly in the Strait of Hormuz, creating grave concerns regarding the safety of civilians and the implications for the global economy. Mojtaba Khamenei’s remarks were broadcasted on state television, following a series of strikes exchanged between the two nations.

Status of Ongoing Strikes

On Saturday, the US Central Command reported that their forces executed strikes for the seventh consecutive night, targeting what they identified as surveillance sites and military logistics infrastructure. Soon thereafter, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced that Tehran was no longer adhering to the commitments outlined in the interim agreement, citing violations by the US.

Recent Iranian strikes reportedly inflicted serious damages in Kuwait, with officials indicating that a water desalination plant and an oil facility were targeted. While specific locations were not revealed, several injuries were reported at the oil facility, and a fire at the desalination plant resulted in the temporary shutdown of several power generation units.

This attack marked the second incident within two days against a critical desalination plant in Kuwait, given that around 90 per cent of its drinking water relies on this process. The Kuwait Fire Force confirmed injuries among firefighters responding to two separate blazes caused by these recent strikes, resulting in Kuwait temporarily closing its airspace over safety concerns.

Consequences and Wider Regional Impact

As the situation deteriorated, Iraq confirmed that it successfully intercepted attack drones over Irbil. There were also reports from Jordan stating that the country’s air defence systems had downed Iranian missiles. Alarm sirens were activated in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, indicating the widespread concern regarding potential threats.

Iran’s Energy Ministry acknowledged the damage to “power infrastructure” during US airstrikes, calling for reduced power usage in southern provinces facing extreme heat. Moreover, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued warnings that nations hosting US military forces should anticipate a corresponding response. Iranian authorities reported a devastating toll from US strikes over the past three weeks, with at least 50 fatalities and over 500 injuries.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has led to ascending oil prices and a critical alteration in shipping practices, given its significance as a global shipping pathway. Recent reassertions of US military presence in the region, including renewed threats from President Trump regarding military action on power stations and bridges, add to an already tense situation. With the interim agreement under strain and continuous hostilities, the conflict remains deeply entwined with strategic interests in the region.
