“If It’s Legal, Show the Papers”: Sukanta Majumdar Defends Demolition of Abhishek Banerjee’s Amtala Office

The CSR Journal Magazine

On July 19, Union Minister of State and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sukanta Majumdar asserted that the demolition of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee’s office in Amtala was due to its alleged illegal status. Majumdar stated, “His office was illegal; that is why it was demolished. If he claims his office is legal, let him produce the papers.” The statement was made during an interaction with the media, reflecting the ongoing tensions between the BJP and TMC.

An anti-encroachment operation had been conducted at Banerjee’s office amidst heightened security measures, underscoring the seriousness of the action taken. This incident has stirred significant political discourse in the region. Majumdar’s comments attach a legal dimension to the dispute, suggesting that the office’s dismantling was justified.

Majumdar Questions Banerjee’s Credibility

Sukanta Majumdar also took the opportunity to question the credibility of Abhishek Banerjee amidst rising political tensions. Referring to past statements made by Banerjee, he noted, “As for his challenges—who would believe them? Back in 2019, he declared that if Arjun Singh won, he would chop off his own hand. Arjun Singh did win, yet he didn’t chop off his hand; he makes such challenges all the time.” This critique aims to undermine Banerjee’s position within the party and among supporters.

Majumdar dismissed Banerjee’s claims regarding the BJP’s influence over TMC’s internal conflicts. He maintained that the BJP has no interest in the internal matters of the TMC, asserting that the party is facing issues independently. “Let them fracture. Whoever emerges victorious from their infighting, we will defeat them again,” he added, suggesting anticipated electoral advantages for the BJP in forthcoming contests.

In a defiant stance, Abhishek Banerjee issued a challenge to party members who have defected, inviting them to return to the TMC while promising to resign from his post within an hour should they do so. This remark reflects his commitment to maintaining party unity and addressing dissent within the ranks.

Banerjee Challenges Defectors and Reflects on TMC’s Performance

Addressing party defectors, Banerjee confronted those who allegedly made “deals” with the BJP, asserting that his leadership should not be blamed for the party’s past electoral challenges. He highlighted the TMC’s achievements in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the party secured 29 seats in West Bengal. His remarks pointed to a significant electoral success, positioning him as a key figure in the party’s current narrative.

Banerjee responded to critics who question his leadership by stating that those who chose to leave the party did so only after the elections, questioning the timing of their departure. “Those who are leaving after the 4th (counting day), why didn’t they leave before?” he queried. This statement aims to reaffirm his connection to the party’s success while challenging the legitimacy of the defectors’ actions.

Emphasising his role within the TMC, Banerjee posed a rhetorical question: “If Abhishek Banerjee is responsible for the losses, then Abhishek Banerjee must also be credited for the victory in 2024. Will you accept that?” With these words, he sought to consolidate his leadership amidst internal challenges.
