Iran Says UAE ‘Cannot Play Victim’ After Supporting Aggression Against Tehran

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, expressed strong condemnation of allegations made by the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. This statement occurred during the second session of the Meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in New Delhi. The UAE’s accusations suggested that Iran was involved in attacking Emirati territory, which Gharibabadi vehemently rejected.

According to the Iranian Embassy, Gharibabadi accused the UAE of playing a crucial role in facilitating military aggression against Iran. He explicitly stated that a nation contributing to the escalation of tensions lacks the legitimacy to make political accusations against Iran.

He referred to the 1974 United Nations General Assembly Resolution, which clarifies that providing support to aggressors constitutes an act of aggression itself. Gharibabadi claimed this categorises the UAE as an aggressor rather than merely an accomplice to any aggression.

Allegations of Collusion with Aggressors

During his address, Gharibabadi stressed that Iran could no longer tolerate the ongoing situation characterised by attacks on its people and infrastructure. He accused the UAE of colluding with aggressors, implying that the regional balance of power is being undermined.

He asserted that Iran is a powerful nation and cannot remain passive while its sovereignty is under threat. The Deputy Minister described the situation as unacceptable, especially given the participation of the UAE, a neighbouring country.

Gharibabadi also claimed that Iran’s actions are in accordance with the United Nations Charter, specifically its right to self-defence. He stated that Iran has no option but to target facilities related to U.S. military bases located in the UAE, arguing that these actions were legitimate under international law.

Documentation of Civilian Consequences

In his statements, Gharibabadi went on to emphasize Iran’s collaboration with other regional nations, including the UAE, by sharing intelligence on potential attacks by the U.S. and Israel. He suggested that the UAE had disregarded these warnings and instead positioned itself as a victim. He labelled the Islamic Republic of Iran as the true victim in the current scenario.

Further elaborating on the humanitarian impact, he noted that UAE cooperation has resulted in significant civilian casualties, including over 4,000 innocent lives lost due to attacks on 130,000 targets within Iran. He stated emphatically that the narrative of the UAE being a victim contradicts the realities and that they are complicit in these actions.

Gharibabadi announced that Iran intends to pursue the matter through legal and international channels, highlighting that it has submitted over 120 diplomatic communications to the United Nations Security Council, comprising more than 500 pages. He stressed that every military aircraft launch from the UAE has been meticulously recorded.

Call for Unity Against Coercion

Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi addressed the BRICS meeting, urging countries to unite against what he termed American bullying. He argued for the need to consign such practices to historical oblivion.

Araghchi indicated that many representatives present were well-acquainted with the coercive tactics used by the U.S. and urged the BRICS nations to respond in a unified and assertive manner.

His remarks reflect a broader call for collective action among emerging economies in opposition to external pressures, which he characterised as variations of the same reprehensible conduct.
