Iran Conducts Attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait Following US Strikes

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran recently executed drone and missile strikes against Bahrain and Kuwait, actions that reportedly followed new airstrikes by the United States on Iranian territory. This escalation comes amid rising tensions surrounding control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas shipments. Iranian officials have indicated that if US attacks persist, diplomatic negotiations aimed at resolving ongoing conflicts may come to a complete standstill.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has claimed responsibility for the strikes on both nations. Following these incidents, Kuwait reported successfully intercepting Iranian drones and missiles shortly after the US strikes, with no casualties or damages recorded. Conversely, Bahrain stated that the attacks caused damage to a residential building close to the international airport, also avoiding any casualties.

In a statement, Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry characterised the attacks as a “dangerous escalation,” asserting that they reflect a deliberate and systematic pattern of aggression from Tehran. These incidents occur in a context where US military presence in the region, particularly in Bahrain, remains substantial, especially with the presence of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.

Impacts on Regional Negotiations

Amidst the military confrontations, diplomatic discussions between the US and Iran continue regarding an interim agreement. These deliberations encompass critical topics such as the governance of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of US sanctions on Iranian ports, and Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. A memorandum signed earlier in June stipulated a 60-day timeframe for both countries to finalise arrangements.

The International community has long viewed the Strait of Hormuz as an international waterway, despite it lying within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. Recent actions by Iran, including attacks on vessels utilising routes on the Omani side, have increased tensions further.

Despite the heightened threat in the region, commercial maritime traffic appears to have maintained a steady flow through the strait. The maritime body, overseen by the US Navy, reported that 89 commercial transits occurred over three days, albeit still below the historical daily average. This situation underscores a complex and evolving maritime landscape amid obvious geopolitical tensions.

Continued Violence in Lebanon and Regional Unrest

In parallel to the situation between Iran and its Gulf neighbours, violence persists in Lebanon. Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have engaged in conflicts that reignited shortly after hostilities escalated involving Iran. Following recent skirmishes, Israeli military actions have included incursions into southern Lebanese regions, claiming a need for security against Hezbollah threats. Hezbollah, for its part, has dismissed calls to disarm and indicated that it will continue its military engagements.

Reports indicate that an Israeli soldier was killed by Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon, while Israel’s military has responded with its own strikes in the region. Meanwhile, discussions involving a proposed “conflict control unit” have been suggested, focusing on creating a pathway for dialogue between Iran, the US, and Lebanon.

The region’s volatility casts a shadow over any substantive ceasefire discussions. Compounded by continuing military actions and diplomatic stagnation, the overall situation remains precarious. Both local and international stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, as calls for a truce and de-escalation become increasingly urgent amidst rising casualties and tensions, particularly in Lebanon.
