International Women’s Day: Gujarat’s Asmitaben Patel Inspires Rural Women with Rs 10 Lakh Annual Income

The CSR Journal Magazine

As the global community observes International Women’s Day on March 8, the story of Asmitaben Ashok Patel from Soldhara village in Chikhli taluka, Gujarat, serves as a remarkable illustration of determination and self-sufficiency. Reflecting the adage “Women’s power is the true strength of society,” Asmitaben has not only pursued her ambitions but also uplifted 10 other women in her community. Her journey aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on self-reliance and empowerment.

Upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Conference

In April 2026, the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) South Gujarat will take place in Surat. This conference aims to connect local women’s self-help groups and rural entrepreneurs with international markets, creating opportunities for women like Asmitaben to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and products.

Background and Early Life

Raised in a farming family, Asmitaben cultivated her skills in agriculture and animal husbandry from a young age. Following the death of her father during her pursuit of an Art Teacher Diploma, she faced financial hardships. With encouraging support from her in-laws and her own perseverance, she completed her Bachelor’s degree and remained committed to her education and personal growth amid challenges.

Beginning of Her Entrepreneurial Journey

Faced with limited income from farming, Asmitaben completed a beekeeping course in 2010-11, which marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial venture. She began producing honey at home, later marketing it locally. In 2014, her pursuit of knowledge continued with the completion of a bakery course from Navsari Agricultural University, further honing her skills.

Formation of Sahyadri Sakhi Mandal

In 2015, with support from rural development officials, Asmitaben established the ‘Sahyadri Sakhi Mandal’ comprising ten women. Initially, the group focused on producing pickles from seasonal fruits such as mango and lemon. A revolving fund of Rs 15,000 under Mission Mangalam enabled them to diversify, allowing production of ragi-based products, papad, biscuits, and flour. Their goods were showcased at various agricultural fairs, enhancing their market presence.

Expansion and Recognition

With a business loan of Rs 2 lakh, the Mandal acquired a turmeric processing and grinding machine, leading to the successful production of natural turmeric powder. Today, the group specializes in natural and handmade food products. Women manage various tasks such as honey packaging, pickle preparation, ragi wafers, and bamboo handicrafts, selling their products at local markets and national SARAS fairs.

Achievements and Impact

Asmitaben’s annual income now stands at Rs 10.20 lakh, earning her the title “Lakhpati Didi” within her community. Her success is attributed to the Mission Mangalam initiative, which has been instrumental in facilitating the empowerment of rural women. Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), Asmitaben’s contributions have garnered several honors, including the “Krishi Ratna Award” from the Government of Gujarat and the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Award in April 2015.

Empowerment Through Community

The narrative of Asmitaben Patel transcends personal achievement; it embodies the concepts of rural development, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods. Through Sahyadri Sakhi Mandal, she has created local employment opportunities utilizing indigenous resources. Asmitaben emphasizes the strength of unity, stating that like a robust tree, the group thrives when given the right opportunities to flourish.

Celebrating Women’s Contributions

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, recognition is given to inspiring figures like Asmitaben, whose efforts have fostered new opportunities and driven positive change within their communities.
