Harmanpreet Kaur Breaks Down on Live TV, Reveals What Has Changed

The CSR Journal Magazine

Harmanpreet Kaur recently displayed an impressive return to form, scoring an unbeaten 91 runs off just 41 balls against Zimbabwe in the third and final T20I. This performance marked a significant turnaround for the former captain, who had been struggling with her batting in recent matches. During an interview at the innings break, she became emotional as she reflected on her journey back to form and expressed gratitude to those who supported her through challenging times.

The 37-year-old cricketer had stepped down as captain across all formats earlier in the month, following a series of ten matches without a half-century. Despite her personal struggles, India secured victories in both the Women’s T20 Asia Cup and the Asian Games, highlighting the team’s overall success. However, Kaur’s performance against Zimbabwe showcased her regained confidence and rhythm, as she struck ten fours and five sixes during her innings.

During the interview, Kaur struggled to contain her emotions, stating, “It feels great. Just wanted to enjoy myself, and great that I got some time in the middle and really enjoyed myself on the field.” Her heartfelt words resonated with viewers, illustrating the significance of the moment for her career.

Support from Coaches and Team

In her conversation, Kaur acknowledged the encouragement she received from former India women’s team head coach WV Raman, who was present during the broadcast. She credited him for his supportive words, saying, “I think I should give credit to you also. The moment we came, you stepped in and you said, ‘Now you do what you want to do,’ and that’s what I want to do.” This recognition highlighted the importance of mentorship in her journey back to form.

Kaur mentioned that stepping down from the captaincy had alleviated some pressure, allowing her to focus on enjoying her time on the field. “Now it’s all about going out there and enjoying myself on the field, and that’s exactly what I want to do,” she remarked. This shift in mindset appears to have positively impacted her performance, enabling her to play more freely.

She also expressed gratitude towards batting coach Himanshu Chawla, crediting him for the preparation that led to her successful innings. Kaur stated, “After the Asian Games, I got some time in the nets. I really want to thank Himanshu bhaiya, who’s been working really hard on me, and today’s batting was all him.” This acknowledgment underscores the collaborative effort behind her achievements.

Significant Milestone Achieved

Kaur’s unbeaten 91 marked her first half-century since she began her stint as a non-captain. Additionally, this score stands as the second-highest individual total by an Indian batter at the No. 4 position or lower in Women’s T20Is, trailing only her own record of 103 against New Zealand during the 2018 T20 World Cup. This achievement further solidifies her status as a key player in the team.

In the post-match presentation, Kaur explained how hitting an early boundary helped her gauge the pitch conditions, boosting her confidence. “I think I hit the (second) ball for four, and that was when I realised it was a good pitch where the ball was coming on nicely to the bat,” she noted. This insight reflects her strategic approach to batting and her ability to adapt to varying match situations.

Looking ahead, Kaur emphasised the importance of continuing to work on her batting skills and maintaining the processes established during training. “Batting is key for me, and I just want to keep working on it and repeating those processes in the nets,” she stated. Her commitment to improvement is indicative of her dedication to the sport and her team.
