India’s Smartphone Shipments Drop 26% Year-on-Year Amid Rising Prices

The CSR Journal Magazine

The festive season in India typically boosts smartphone sales, but this year, the trend appears to be reversing. Reports indicate that smartphone shipments have decreased significantly, raising concerns among manufacturers and retailers alike. One key factor is the rising cost of smartphones, which has led consumers to be more cautious with their spending. As prices increase, many individuals are reportedly delaying their upgrades, opting to hold onto their current devices for a longer period.

Additionally, smartphone manufacturers and retailers are adopting a more conservative approach to stock management. They are reportedly monitoring inventory levels closely, which has resulted in fewer units being introduced into the market. This cautious strategy may be a response to the overall economic climate and consumer behaviour, as companies aim to avoid overstock situations.

The timing of the Diwali festival this year has also played a significant role in the slowdown. With the festival occurring later than usual, brands have adjusted their stock release schedules, pushing some shipments that would typically occur in September into October and November. This shift has further contributed to the decline in sales during the initial festive period.

Market Performance and Shipment Statistics

The decline in smartphone shipments is evident in the latest statistics. According to Omdia, India’s smartphone shipments fell by 26 per cent year-on-year, totalling 35.8 million units in the July-September quarter of 2026. This figure marks the lowest shipment volume for a third quarter since 2016, highlighting the extent of the market’s downturn.

The decline is not isolated to a single brand; among the five largest smartphone vendors, four experienced double-digit declines in shipments. Samsung emerged as the only exception, with a modest decrease of 1 per cent in its shipments. Samsung’s performance, which saw it regain the top position in the market, was bolstered by its Galaxy A-series smartphones, alongside attractive cashback offers and financing options that made upgrades more accessible for consumers.

In contrast, vivo, which had previously led the market, fell to second place with shipments dropping by 34 per cent to 6.4 million units. OPPO and Xiaomi also faced challenges, with OPPO’s shipments declining by 24 per cent to 4.9 million units and Xiaomi’s falling by 28 per cent to 4.7 million units. Both brands are reportedly grappling with the impact of rising prices and cautious stock management by retailers. Apple’s shipments also experienced a decline of 20 per cent, totalling 3.9 million units; however, its market share increased from 10 per cent to 11 per cent, reflecting the overall contraction in market size.

Future Outlook for the Smartphone Market

As the festive season progresses, questions arise regarding whether the current slowdown is a temporary issue linked to timing or indicative of a longer-term trend. Omdia has projected a further decline in India’s smartphone market by a low single-digit percentage in 2027, suggesting ongoing challenges for manufacturers.

For smartphone makers, the primary challenge will be to entice consumers to upgrade their devices. This may require offering more affordable options, improved financing solutions, or features that provide significant enhancements over existing models. The ability to address these consumer needs will be crucial for companies aiming to navigate the current market landscape successfully.

In summary, the festive season in India, which traditionally drives smartphone sales, is witnessing a notable decline in demand. Factors such as rising prices, cautious inventory management, and the timing of major festivals are contributing to this trend. The future of the smartphone market will depend on how effectively manufacturers adapt to these challenges.
