Intense Heatwave Continues as Uttar Pradesh’s Banda Records 48.2°C

The CSR Journal Magazine

The heatwave gripping Uttar Pradesh has intensified, with Banda district registering a maximum temperature of 48.2 degrees Celsius on May 21. This marks the third consecutive day that Banda has been identified as the hottest location in India, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Residents in Banda are reportedly seeking refuge from the oppressive heat by indulging in sherbet and purchasing water from local stalls. The rising temperatures have become a significant concern for those living in the area, prompting discussions about potential causes and contributing factors.

Local resident Puneet Saxena has attributed the escalating temperatures to environmental issues such as deforestation and illegal mining operations. He described the current conditions as a challenging ‘Agni Pariksha’, reflecting the extreme hardship faced by the locals.

Health Facilities Respond to Rising Heat Concerns

In light of the soaring temperatures, civil health authorities in Lucknow have established a special “cold room” facility within the Civil Hospital. This initiative aims to accommodate patients suffering from heat stress and heatstroke, as temperatures in the state capital have also risen above 42 degrees Celsius.

Devesh Chandra Pandey, Chief Medical Superintendent of Lucknow Civil Hospital, confirmed that the institution has made extensive preparations in response to directive from the government. A dedicated ward containing ten beds has been set up, along with a cold room comprising three air-conditioned spaces. Medical supplies, including oral rehydration salts and ice packs, have been stocked in anticipation of increased patient numbers.

Despite the extensive preparations, Pandey indicated that there have been no reports of patients in critical condition. The healthcare facilities are on alert to address any rise in cases associated with the extreme weather conditions.

Meteorological Insights on Heatwave Causes

The IMD has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for multiple districts in western Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, as the heatwave persists. Meteorologist Dr Dinesh noted that Banda has been experiencing temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius for nearly a week. Key contributors to the high temperatures include direct sunlight due to the area’s proximity to the Tropic of Cancer, clear skies, plateau terrain, and deforestation.

Dr Dinesh also pointed out that low soil moisture levels and drying rivers are further exacerbating the situation. As the heatwave continues, health professionals are reporting an uptick in cases of fever, dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhoea, attributed to the extreme heat.

District Magistrate Amit Aseri announced that hospitals and ambulances are on high alert, with advisories being disseminated to the public. Citizens have been urged to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, as the heatwave poses significant risks to health and safety.
