The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced the launch of an online platform to gather public donations for a legal aid fund aimed at supporting individuals involved in recent protests facing legal repercussions. This announcement was made during a press conference in New Delhi on July 27, where CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das expressed concerns regarding the government potentially targeting participants once protest momentum diminishes.

Das highlighted that prior to concluding a 37-day agitation on July 25, the CJP consulted senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal for legal advice. He indicated that similar tactics had been observed in previous protests, where individuals were allegedly implicated in false cases post-agitation. The apprehension is that, following this latest movement, the government may initiate action against those individuals.

Emphasising the need for support, Das stated that CJP had been providing legal and medical assistance to students throughout the protests. According to him, efforts are underway to enhance coordination with legal professionals to ensure comprehensive support across various states.

Legal Support Initiatives and Fundraising Efforts

In addition to fundraising activities, the CJP aims to file FIRs against police officials accused of misconduct during the protests. Das reiterated the organisation’s commitment to offer extensive assistance to protestors nationwide and confirmed ongoing communication with lawyers to facilitate this assistance.

During the press conference, Kapil Sibal also spoke on the matter, offering both legal and financial support for those who protested. He expressed his intention to contribute Rs 1 crore to the cause and called upon other legal professionals to join efforts in representing and aiding protestors undergoing legal challenges.

Ratna Singh, another CJP leader, reported that the state of Bihar had seen one of the harshest crackdowns on protestors, which included law enforcement allegedly using AK-47 rifles against demonstrators. She confirmed that the CJP is actively collaborating with lawyers to provide necessary legal relief in that region, specifically mentioning cities like Siwan, Patna, and Chapra.

Ultimatum Issued to Government Regarding Alleged Breach of Agreement

Earlier that same day, the CJP issued an ultimatum to the Central Government, accusing it of violating the terms of an agreement that concluded the recent NEET agitation. In a communication addressed to prominent politicians, including BJP president JP Nadda, spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka cited instances of student detentions and police actions in states such as Bihar and West Bengal.

Ranka stressed the need for the immediate withdrawal of FIRs against protestors and the release of detained individuals. He warned that should these demands not be met, the CJP may feel compelled to resume nationwide protests. He also requested confirmation of the written agreement regarding legal protections that was supposed to be shared by Tuesday.

During the press conference, Ranka reiterated the organisation’s position, highlighting that they are awaiting the government’s written assurances. He emphasised that the aim is to ensure that protestors and organisers are not harassed and that no future legal actions are taken against them.

As discussions regarding the protests unfold, the situation has sparked significant unrest within Parliament, prompting questions regarding police violence and government accountability. Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh had previously assured protestors that no action would be taken against them, yet concerns remain heightened following recent events.
