Indian Teen Dies After Horse-Drawn Carriage Accident in New York

The CSR Journal Magazine

An 18-year-old tourist from India has tragically died following an incident involving a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park, New York City. The victim, name reported as Romanch Mahajan, was involved in the accident shortly before 3 pm on Wednesday. During the ride, the horse unexpectedly bolted, and Mahajan was thrown from the carriage, sustaining a serious head injury as he fell to the ground.

Despite being rushed to a hospital in critical condition, Mahajan later succumbed to his injuries. Other passengers within the carriage reportedly declined any medical assistance following the incident. The sudden nature of the event has prompted renewed discussions surrounding the safety of carriage rides in the park.

Authorities revealed that the horse, which had been working in the park for a mere six weeks, startled and took off after its driver had temporarily stepped away to take photographs of the passengers. This momentary distraction led to an uncontrollable situation for both the passengers and the carriage operator.

Response from the Transport Workers Union

The Transport Workers Union (TWU), representing employees within the carriage industry, has expressed significant concern over the incident. Union officials emphasised that it is unacceptable for drivers to leave the carriage unattended for any reason. Alexander Kemp, TWU Local 100 Administrative Vice President, stated support for a thorough investigation into the accident.

Kemp mentioned that the driver of the carriage has been suspended indefinitely, and the seven-year-old horse named Sampson would be retired from the carriage service following this tragic event. The union also highlighted broader safety issues in Central Park, calling for enhancements applicable not only to horse-drawn carriages but also for e-bikes, delivery vehicles, and pedicabs.

The TWU has expressed condolences to Mahajan’s family, signalling the tragic impact this event has had on the community and the carriage industry. They urged for immediate action to ensure the safety of all vehicles operating in the park.

Calls for Legislative Action

The recent fatality has intensified scrutiny over the horse-drawn carriage industry in Central Park, which has long faced opposition from animal rights activists and public safety advocates. This incident occurred shortly after another carriage horse collapsed and died while at work in the park, prompting further calls for change.

The Central Park Conservancy has expressed that it is “absolutely devastated” by Mahajan’s death, reiterating its demand for New York City to implement a ban on horse-drawn carriages. The organisation regards the accident as indicative of the public safety hazards posed by what it described as an outdated practice amid one of the nation’s busiest public spaces.

As part of the ongoing advocacy efforts, the conservancy has urged lawmakers to consider Ryder’s Law. This proposed legislation aims to phase out horse-drawn carriages while providing alternative employment opportunities for drivers. Ryder’s Law was reintroduced in the City Council on Thursday, after failing to gain traction last year, even with the backing of animal rights groups and former New York Mayor Eric Adams.
