Indian Railways to Upgrade 40-Year-Old Reservation System with AI Features from August

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Railways is set to commence the integration of its upgraded passenger reservation system in August, marking a significant technological advancement aimed at enhancing ticket booking and overall passenger experience. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently oversaw the transition plans during a meeting at Rail Bhawan, emphasising the importance of a seamless shift for passengers moving from the long-standing 40-year-old system.

Present at the review meeting were Union Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu, reflecting the governmental commitment to this initiative. The upgrade aligns with the increasing trend of digitalisation within railway ticket booking in India, where services are progressively shifting to app-based platforms.

Comprehensive Upgrade of an Age-Old System

The current railway reservation system, which was initiated in 1986, has benefitted from several minor updates throughout its operation. According to the Ministry of Railways, the newly upgraded system employs state-of-the-art technology, significantly boosting operational capacity. Internet-based ticket booking was first introduced by Indian Railways in 2002, and there has been a notable rise in its utilisation ever since.

Officials report that about 88 per cent of the total railway ticketing demand is now managed through digital means, greatly lessening the reliance on traditional physical ticket counters. This shift not only improves efficiency but also caters to the increasing demand for convenient booking options amongst passengers.

Growth of RailOne App and Its Features

The RailOne mobile application, launched in July 2025, has emerged as a crucial component of Indian Railways’ digital transformation. In less than a year, the app has recorded over 3.5 crore downloads on Android and iOS platforms. The application provides a variety of services, enabling users to book, cancel, and refund both reserved and unreserved tickets.

Moreover, passengers can obtain real-time train status updates, platform information, and coach position details through the app. An additional service allows users to order food directly to their train seats, enhancing the travel experience. Reports indicate that approximately 9.29 lakh tickets are booked each day via the RailOne app, comprising 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets.

Introduction of AI-Based Waitlist Prediction

A noteworthy feature recently introduced to the RailOne app is the AI-driven waitlist confirmation prediction system. This innovative addition provides passengers with estimates regarding the likelihood of their waitlisted tickets being confirmed prior to travel. Officials have noted a substantial increase in prediction accuracy, which has risen from 53 per cent to 94 per cent following the implementation of the AI system this year.

In conjunction with these advancements, Indian Railways has announced a subsidy of Rs 60,239 crore on passenger tickets for the financial year 2024-25. This subsidy equates to an average of 43 per cent per passenger fare. In practical terms, if the service cost is Rs 100, passengers will only need to pay roughly Rs 57 as a ticket fare, further facilitating accessibility to rail travel in India.
