Indian Railways Approves ₹448 Crore Upgrade to Boost Capacity on Key South India Routes

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant move aimed at improving railway operations and easing congestion on busy rail corridors, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned projects worth nearly ₹448 crore to upgrade electric traction systems on two important routes in South India. The approved projects cover the Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal section under South Central Railway and the Bengaluru–Tumakuru section under South Western Railway.

The investment is expected to strengthen rail infrastructure, enhance train movement, and improve operational efficiency for both passenger and freight services across Telangana and Karnataka.

Shift to Advanced 2×25 kV Traction System

As part of the modernization drive, Indian Railways will replace the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system with an advanced 2×25 kV system on both corridors. Railway officials say the new technology will provide a more stable and efficient power supply, enabling trains to operate more smoothly and reliably.

The Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal project has been approved at a cost of ₹285.01 crore and will cover approximately 141 route kilometres. The route forms part of the important Dharmavaram–Dhone–Mahbubnagar–Secunderabad–Medchal–Mudkhed–Indore–Ajmer corridor, which handles substantial passenger and freight traffic.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru–Tumakuru section will receive an investment of ₹162.57 crore. The project will cover 120 track kilometres and forms part of the strategically important Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-10 connecting major economic and industrial centres from Pune to Kanniyakumari.

Expected Benefits for Passengers and Freight Services

Railway authorities believe the upgraded traction system will significantly increase route capacity and improve overall operational efficiency. A stronger power supply will allow trains to run more consistently, reducing delays and supporting the movement of heavier freight trains and longer passenger services.

The Bengaluru–Tumakuru project is expected to ease congestion on one of Karnataka’s busiest railway corridors, benefiting daily commuters as well as long-distance travelers. Similarly, the Telangana project is expected to support faster freight movement, helping industries and businesses dependent on rail logistics.

Strengthening Future Rail Growth

The ₹448 crore investment reflects Indian Railways’ broader strategy of modernising high-density corridors and building a future-ready transport network. By improving power infrastructure and increasing capacity, the projects are expected to enhance passenger experience, boost freight efficiency, and contribute to regional economic growth across southern India.
