India’s Universities Fail To Secure Spot In Asia’s Top 10

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s higher education landscape sees thousands of students applying to both domestic and international universities annually, aiming for admission to esteemed institutions worldwide. Despite the presence of several reputed universities in India, a limited number feature prominently in global rankings. The latest QS World University Rankings 2027 has identified the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) as the nation’s highest-ranked university.

IIT Delhi improved its standing this year, ascending five places from 123rd in the previous year to 118th globally, achieving an overall score of 65.7. Other Indian institutions also performed, with IIT Bombay claiming the 134th position and IIT Madras at 170th. However, the broader question remains: how do Indian universities compare to their Asian counterparts?

In a more focused examination of the QS World University Rankings 2027, it is evident that no Indian university has made it to the top ten institutions in Asia. Instead, the rankings underline the dominance of universities from Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, which together occupy eight of the top ten slots in the region.

Top Ten Universities In Asia According To QS Rankings

The QS World University Rankings 2027 have identified the leading universities in Asia, showcasing their impressive overall scores and academic reputations. The National University of Singapore heads the list with a score of 96.2, followed by the University of Hong Kong at 96 and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) with a score of 93.6.

Other notable institutions include Peking University, which ranks fourth with a score of 92.6, and Tsinghua University at fifth place with a score of 92.1. The rankings highlight not only the students’ academic reputation but also employability, faculty-student ratios, and internationalisation efforts, demonstrating the strength of these universities in creating successful graduates.

Despite IIT Delhi being the highest-ranked Indian university globally, its position in Asia is 30th, which reflects that Indian institutions have significant challenges ahead in improving their competitiveness in the region’s educational landscape.

Performance of Indian Universities in Regional Rankings

While no Indian universities featured in Asia’s top ten in the QS World University Rankings 2027, a few have shown progress within the regional context. IIT Delhi, maintaining its top position within India, ranks 30th in Asia, with IIT Bombay closely following at 33rd and IIT Madras at 43rd.

IIT Delhi’s strengths are evident in its research impact, achieving a remarkable 97.3 in Citations per Faculty. In addition, it garnered a score of 96.9 for Employer Reputation, showing that the institution is well-regarded by industry professionals. Other scores include 64.6 for Academic Reputation and 66.5 for International Research Network.

Similarly, IIT Bombay has performed favourably in employability, rating 97.8 in Employer Reputation and 78.2 in Employment Outcomes. It also received solid scores across various parameters, namely Citations per Faculty at 79.3 and Academic Reputation at 72.5. IIT Madras, whilst ranking lower, still achieved commendable scores in Citations per Faculty at 95.3 and Employer Reputation at 87.4.

In conclusion, while Indian universities continue to demonstrate improvements in significant QS indicators, the gap remains evident in their absence from Asia’s elite top ten. Universities in Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China continue to lead, highlighting the challenges faced by Indian institutions in enhancing their global standings.
