“In India, there is an absolutely crazy love for Israel”: Netanyahu

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasised the increasing warmth in the relationship between India and Israel, asserting that he experiences stronger backing from India than from virtually any other nation. During a conference in the West Bank on Thursday, he acknowledged India’s pivotal role in Israel’s global outreach strategy and described the bond as unique. Netanyahu remarked on the unusually robust public affection towards Israel in India.

Notably, he stated, “In India, there is an absolutely crazy love for Israel, truly crazy,” adding that he believes he has more followers from India than any other country. This declaration follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant visit to Israel in February, which further elevated bilateral relations.

Special Strategic Partnership Established

During PM Modi’s visit to Jerusalem on February 26, 2026, both leaders announced the establishment of a “Special Strategic Partnership for Peace, Innovation and Prosperity.” This partnership aims to enhance cooperation across numerous sectors, including defence, trade, technology, cyber security, agriculture, energy, and artificial intelligence.

The discussions also addressed collaborative efforts in emerging fields such as semiconductors, quantum technology, fintech, biotechnology, and digital healthcare. Modi and Netanyahu underlined the necessity for a prompt conclusion of the proposed Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to augment business and investment relationships.

Moreover, PM Modi expressed support for the Gaza Peace Plan during his discussions with Netanyahu, advocating for tranquillity and stability in the region. The visit fostered deeper ties, marking a notable chapter in the ongoing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Historic Milestones in Diplomatic Relations

PM Modi’s inaugural visit to Israel in 2017 represented a historic turning point in the diplomatic relationship. He was the first Indian prime minister to visit the country, a move that was perceived as an indication of New Delhi’s willingness to strengthen ties with Israel without the hesitations that characterised previous decades. Since that visit, cooperation between India and Israel has markedly intensified in areas such as defence, technology, and innovation.

Israel has emerged as one of India’s principal defence suppliers, further solidifying this partnership. Today, India ranks among Israel’s largest trading partners in Asia, reflecting the significant growth in collaboration in various sectors. The bilateral relationship also extends to broader regional initiatives, such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the I2U2 grouping, which includes India, Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

Overall, the evolving relationship is seen as beneficial for both nations, with expectations of cultivating further opportunities for synergy in diverse fields. The mutual interest in expanding cooperation underscores the importance both nations place on their strategic partnership.
