The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Armenia are making strides in their defence ties as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan met with Lieutenant General Edvard Asryan, the Chief of the General Staff of Armenia, in New Delhi on April 28, 2026. The meeting focused on exploring potential joint ventures in the development of military hardware. General Chauhan received Lieutenant General Asryan upon his arrival with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, an indication of the significance attributed to the visit.

The engagement was documented by the Headquarters of Integrated Defence Staff (IDS HQ) on a social media platform, highlighting the discussions held during the official visit. The meeting reflects a sustained commitment to advancing defence relations, emphasising the mutual benefits expected from a strengthened partnership.

During their discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a robust strategic partnership, which they aim to make future-oriented and mutually beneficial. This dialogue builds upon a previous visit by an Indian defence delegation to Armenia led by General Chauhan in February, indicating a continuous flow of dialogue between the two nations.

Continuity of High-Level Engagements

The recent meeting follows General Chauhan’s four-day visit to Armenia earlier this year, during which he met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This earlier interaction focused on evolving opportunities for collaboration and methods to strengthen security cooperation. The Prime Minister acknowledged the mutual interests in enhancing bilateral defence relations amid changing geopolitical dynamics.

In conjunction with his discussions with Mr Pashinyan, General Chauhan held dialogues with Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Abisoghomonyan. They exchanged views on the regional security landscape and identified pertinent bilateral issues requiring attention. These engagements exemplify the growing diplomatic and defence dialogue between India and Armenia.

Extensive discussions were also held with Armenia’s Defence Minister, Suren Papikyan, focusing on various security concerns pertinent to both nations. General Chauhan’s leadership during these meetings illustrates India’s proactive approach to strengthening defence cooperation in various domains of security.

Focus on Technology and Modern Warfare

As part of the official visit, General Chauhan addressed faculty and students at the National Defence Research University (NDRU) in Armenia. His talk highlighted the evolving global security environment and underscored the role of technology in modern warfare. The discourse involved significant insights into how technological advancements are reshaping the character of conflict.

General Chauhan’s presentation included discussions on the changing nature of warfare, particularly emphasising the revolution in military affairs and the implications for future conflicts. He articulated the importance of multi-domain operations and how technology serves as a fundamental determinant of power in contemporary military strategy.

The discussions encompassed the various domains of modern warfare, including Cyber, Electronic Warfare (EW), Space, and Cognitive aspects. This emphasis on technology reflects a critical understanding that successful defence strategies must incorporate the latest advancements to effectively address emerging challenges in international security.
