Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday in New Delhi, where he reaffirmed India’s unwavering stance on the peaceful resolution of conflicts. This meeting was significant as discussions focused on the ongoing situations in Ukraine and West Asia, alongside strengthening the bilateral partnership between India and Russia.

During the meeting, PM Modi expressed appreciation for the update provided by Lavrov concerning the progress of the Special and Privileged Partnership between the two countries. The Prime Minister’s Office noted that this was part of ongoing efforts in the context of their relationship, which continues to evolve.

The leaders engaged in discussions that highlighted various geopolitical concerns, reiterating their commitment to dialogue and diplomatic avenues to address pressing international issues.

Focus on Bilateral Cooperation

The Prime Minister’s Office indicated that Modi asked Lavrov to convey warm greetings to President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the importance New Delhi attaches to its ties with Moscow. The meeting aimed to build upon the foundations laid in previous meetings, notably during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025.

Foreign Minister Lavrov’s visit coincided with the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meet, where he also met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar a day prior. Jaishankar noted the steady progress in their bilateral relations, despite the increasingly volatile global landscape.

He emphasised the significance of the economic and energy dimensions of the partnership over the last few years, which have become more prominent. The collaboration extends to various fields including science and technology, thereby enhancing skills and talent mobility between the nations.

Geopolitical Context and Future Engagements

Lavrov’s visit to India also highlights Russia’s endorsement of Indian interests on several global platforms. He remarked on the importance of cooperation at the ministerial level, especially during the current BRICS meeting. Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s support for Indian priorities in various international forums, including the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The discussions between the two leaders reflect a mutual commitment to navigate global challenges collectively, acknowledging their shared responsibilities in addressing pressing international issues. The emphasis was placed on cooperation and collaboration on a number of fronts, as global dynamics continue to shift.

As the geopolitical landscape evolves, India’s proactive stance in advocating for peace talks serves as a testament to its diplomatic approach. PM Modi’s dialogue with Lavrov illustrates India’s continuing efforts to maintain strategic relationships while advocating for conflict resolution through negotiations.
