India Achieves Milestone With Over 1 Crore Teachers

The CSR Journal Magazine

As of the latest data from the Union Ministry of Education, India has surpassed the significant threshold of 1.03 crore teachers. This development is set against a backdrop of approximately 24.72 crore students distributed across around 14.67 lakh schools nationwide. These figures have been highlighted in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0, which evaluates the performance levels of educational institutions in various states and Union Territories.

The PGI serves as a comprehensive framework that assesses the quality of school education systems across the country, drawing upon data from UDISE+ and other governmental resources. The information is vital for understanding how educational policies perform in real terms and identifying areas that may require improvement.

Performance Grading Index for States and UTs

The Department of School Education and Literacy has designed the Performance Grading Index to evaluate the effectiveness of States and Union Territories. This methodology categorises regions into performance bands rather than issuing traditional ranks. Consequently, multiple States or Union Territories may occupy the same performance category.

The total score for the PGI for States and Union Territories amounts to 1,000 points, assessed across 70 distinct indicators. These indicators are split into two primary categories: Outcomes and Governance & Management. Six domains further refine these indicators, encompassing Learning Outcomes and Quality, Access, Infrastructure and Facilities, Equity, Governance Processes, and Teacher Education and Training.

Specific data sources for the assessment include UDISE+, PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024, PM POSHAN Portal, PRABANDH Portal, and Vidyanjali Portal. This data-driven approach allows for a nuanced understanding of educational performance on a state and regional level.

District-Level Performance Grading Index

The Performance Grading Index has been expanded to include assessments at the district level, termed the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D). This framework evaluates districts based on a set of common indicators with an emphasis on educational outcomes.

The PGI-D framework consists of 600 points allocated across 70 indicators, which are classified into six categories. These categories focus on Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure, Facilities and Student Entitlements, School Safety and Child Protection, and Digital Learning.

The categories collectively encompass eleven domains, which include learning outcomes, access to education, availability of qualified teachers, professional development, infrastructure and student entitlements, and school safety. Data for the district-level assessment is sourced from UDISE+, PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024, and the PRABANDH Portal, ensuring a detailed analysis of educational efficacy across various districts.

With this significant milestone, India continues to reinforce its commitment to enhancing the educational landscape, providing a structured framework for assessing and improving the quality of education available to its diverse student population.
