The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a red alert for six districts in Odisha, predicting extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coast of West Bengal. This warning highlights the potential for significant weather-related disruptions in the region.

Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD in Bhubaneswar, stated that the low-pressure system is currently situated over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjacent coastline of West Bengal. As a result of this system, various alerts have been issued for Odisha, indicating that severe weather conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.

The districts specifically under the red alert include Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Keonjhar. The IMD has warned that the predicted heavy rainfall may lead to landslides in elevated terrains and flash floods in low-lying areas, posing risks to local populations.

Warnings for Fishermen and Coastal Areas

The IMD has also advised fishermen against venturing into deep sea or coastal waters due to anticipated rough sea conditions. Given the risks associated with these weather phenomena, local ports have raised a Local Alert-Cautionary Signal (LAC-III) to ensure the safety of marine activities.

Clusters of thunderstorms are expected to accompany the heavy rainfall, with wind speeds reaching between 40 and 50 km per hour, according to weather experts. The IMD’s predictions take into consideration the possibility of hazardous conditions that could arise from this combination of intense weather events.

Previously, a severe thunderstorm on June 6 had swept through Bhubaneswar, bringing significant rainfall and high winds that disrupted daily life. This recent weather trend underscores Odisha’s vulnerability to fluctuating weather patterns during the monsoon season.

In tandem with the heavy rainfall warning, areas surrounding Bhubaneswar are preparing for isolated thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and further gusty winds. Local authorities have alerted citizens to remain cautious and stay updated regarding the shifting weather conditions.

In the wake of thunderstorms, oxygenated rainfall has created a more temperate atmosphere, bringing temporary relief from the oppressive summer heat. While the rainfall has led to some disruptions, it has also rejuvenated the environment, offering a refreshing contrast to the usual dry conditions typically observed before the monsoon.
