The CSR Journal Magazine

IIT Bombay has formally announced its collaboration with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury to launch its inaugural academic sub-campus in the United States. The institutions entered into a Letter of Intent on Friday, marking a significant step towards developing innovative academic programmes and research initiatives in science and engineering at the SUNY Old Westbury campus located on Long Island, New York.

The agreement was executed by IIT Bombay’s Director, Professor Shireesh Kedare, and SUNY Old Westbury’s President, Dr Timothy E. Sams, during a ceremony attended by India’s Consul General in New York, Binaya Pradhan. This collaboration paves the way for increased educational exchange and partnership between the two institutions.

Focus Areas of the Collaboration

The proposed IIT Bombay presence at SUNY Old Westbury will emphasise science, engineering, and emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. The institutions plan to jointly develop undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes while promoting collaborative research efforts, faculty exchanges, and various academic conferences.

As part of this initiative, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the collaboration as a landmark development in the academic relationship between India and the United States. He noted that this partnership would enhance India’s research culture, create new learning opportunities for students and scholars, and fortify knowledge exchanges between the two nations.

SUNY Old Westbury has indicated that the collaboration will initially focus on faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and academic events before expanding to include new academic degree programmes. The focus on such collaborative activities is expected to align with the educational and research goals of both institutions.

Statements from Institutional Leaders

Professor Kedare expressed enthusiasm about working with SUNY Old Westbury, praising its leadership for their commitment to quality education and progressive outlook. He remarked that the institutions’ complementary strengths would significantly facilitate the growth of the partnership.

On the other hand, President Dr Timothy E. Sams mentioned the university’s objective to foster a “robust IIT Bombay presence” on the SUNY campus. He highlighted that this initiative will enable students to benefit from joint teaching and research opportunities in fields such as physics and engineering, with an aim of cultivating future global leaders.

The virtual event announcing this partnership was also attended by key officials, including Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Higher Education Secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, and India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Participants described this initiative as one of the most significant advancements in the evolving India-US collaboration in higher education and research.

Significance of the Initiative

The IIT Bombay-SUNY Old Westbury partnership signifies the first academic sub-campus for IIT Bombay on American soil, which aligns with a broader movement among Indian educational institutions to extend their global footprint through international collaborations. This initiative is anticipated to open doors for further cooperative ventures between Indian and American educational entities.

The collaboration not only represents the aspirations of IIT Bombay but also illustrates the integration of global academic standards and practices in India’s higher education landscape. This advancement is expected to foster a culture of learning and innovation that benefits both institutions and their respective student communities.

Overall, this strategic partnership aims to enhance the educational framework and research opportunities for the involved universities, ensuring a lasting impact on both sides of the collaboration.
