A 20-year-old student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was discovered dead in his hostel room on the night of July 28, prompting an immediate police investigation. The individual has been identified as Sohil Rajkumar Sangwan, who was in his second year studying Material Science. Originally from Pilani in Rajasthan, he resided on the IIT Bombay campus located in Powai.

Authorities received information regarding the incident during the early morning hours on July 29. Police officers promptly arrived at the hostel to assess the situation. Initial reports indicate that Sangwan may have died by suicide, with investigators noting that he was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a bedsheet.

Investigating officers have begun examining the student’s mobile phone and other electronic devices. Early findings suggest that Sangwan was reportedly experiencing challenges related to family matters and complications in a personal relationship.

Police Investigate Personal Circumstances

As part of the inquiry, police are scrutinising digital communications found on Sangwan’s phone. These chats allegedly reveal that he had been facing distressing situations prior to his death, which may have aggravated his mental health. Investigators are looking for any other factors that could have contributed to the suspected suicide.

In accordance with standard procedure, the Powai Police Station has filed an Accidental Death Report under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Law enforcement officials have stated that, at present, there is no indication of foul play involved in this tragic incident.
