IIM Calcutta Allows MBA Students to Pursue Start-Ups While Retaining Placement Opportunities

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has introduced a student-centric initiative that enables MBA students to delve into entrepreneurship without forfeiting their placement prospects. This announcement was made by Director Alok Kumar Rai during the induction ceremony for the institute’s 63rd MBA cohort, which consists of 480 students. Under the new policy, those who decide to forgo placements for one year to focus on start-up ventures will have the option to rejoin the placement process the following year if they choose to return.

Promoting Innovation and Career Security

This initiative has been framed as a means to foster innovation while ensuring academic stability for students. Director Alok Kumar Rai indicated during the ceremony that students pursuing entrepreneurial endeavours will not lose their chance to participate in future placements, thus providing them with a safety net to balance the risks associated with entrepreneurship against the need for career security.

The new batch comprises 67 per cent male students and 33 per cent female students, showcasing a diverse demographic. Within this group, 41 per cent are new entrants to the MBA programme, while 59 per cent possess prior professional experience.

The academic background of the students is varied, with engineering graduates constituting 54.7 per cent of the cohort. Other disciplines include commerce (11.5 per cent), science (10.27 per cent), and arts (10 per cent), with the remainder coming from different fields.

Inauguration Ceremony and Industry Participation

The Freshers’ Welcome ceremony featured notable participation from industry leaders. Ganesh Mohan, Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv Asset Management Ltd and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, served as the chief guest, highlighting the importance of industry-academic partnerships.

During the event, Pranav Adani, Managing Director of Adani Enterprises, announced the ongoing implementation of the Adani Accelerated Leadership Programme, which awards full-fee scholarships to six outstanding students each year for a duration of two years. This programme aims to support high-achieving individuals in their academic pursuits.

Furthermore, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised between IIM Calcutta and the Adani Group to extend their collaboration. As part of this partnership, the Adani Group has committed to donating 200 bicycles to enhance mobility on campus, thus contributing to the overall improvement of the campus infrastructure.

Future Prospects for Students

The newly introduced framework for entrepreneurship aims to provide students at IIM Calcutta with an encouraging platform. By enabling students to explore start-up opportunities while ensuring access to placement programmes, the institute seeks to nurture a generation of leaders who are able to adapt to evolving career landscapes.

With rigorous academic preparation and strong industry ties, the graduates emerging from IIM Calcutta are positioned well to navigate the challenges of both entrepreneurship and conventional career paths. This dual focus on innovation and employability reflects a significant shift in how management education is approached in India, particularly in renowned institutions like IIM Calcutta.

As the students embark on their academic journey, the support mechanisms in place, including scholarships and industry partnerships, will serve to enhance their educational experience and future endeavours, whether in entrepreneurship or corporate careers.
