India’s inaugural Hydrogen Train was launched between Jind and Sonipat on July 17, 2026, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s rail transport. The unveiling took place near Delhi, with the Railway Ministry announcing the successful operation of the train, which has already covered over 1,200 kilometres since its commencement. The initiative represents a key step towards cleaner rail mobility.

Environmental Impact and Technological Features

The Hydrogen Train has reportedly replaced over 3,200 litres of diesel consumption with water vapour emissions. The system generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in an environmentally friendly operation that produces only water vapour as a by-product. This eliminates smoke and tailpipe carbon emissions, positioning the train as one of the cleanest options currently available for rail propulsion.

This 10-coach train deploys two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars with a combined output of 2,400 kW. It is further supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders. The innovative technology involves the storage of green hydrogen at pressures of up to 500 bar, which is dispensed at 350 bar. The storage facility at Jind has a total capacity of approximately 3,000 kg, marking the establishment of the Railway’s first dedicated hydrogen storage infrastructure.

Ensuring safety is a paramount consideration for this technology. The Hydrogen Train includes multiple independent safety mechanisms designed to detect leaks, heat, flames, and smoke. These systems are complemented by automatic shut-off features and continuous ventilation, all conforming to international standards and mandatory validations.

Future Prospects and Government Support

Following the successful journey between Jind and Sonipat, the Railways plan to commence trials on the Delhi route shortly. This development indicates a move towards broader operational capabilities for hydrogen-powered trains in the future. The introduction of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train not only exemplifies technological innovation but also showcases India’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the hydrogen-powered train, which aligns with national goals in promoting green initiatives and self-reliance under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ programme. The launch is seen as a milestone for both the railway sector and the country at large, underscoring efforts to utilise indigenous technologies effectively.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that this launch signifies a remarkable achievement in Indian engineering. He noted that the entire propulsion system, along with the corresponding technology, has been developed domestically. This reinforces the nation’s capabilities in creating reliable and eco-friendly transport solutions.
