“Home Minister Responsible…Ask Him How This Happened”: Akhilesh Yadav on Murder of Suvendu Adhikari’s PA

The CSR Journal Magazine

Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, issued a strong condemnation regarding the murder of Chandranath Rath, an aide to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Yadav explicitly stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah bears responsibility for the incident, demanding accountability for the security situation in West Bengal. He emphasised the need for transparency and urged citizens to direct their inquiries towards the Home Minister on social media.

The remarks followed a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata. Yadav’s accusations highlighted his concerns about the safety of individuals within the state’s political landscape, particularly in light of Rath’s violent death.

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity in West Bengal

During his statements, Yadav underscored broader apprehensions regarding the electoral process in West Bengal, asserting that fear tactics had been employed to influence voters during the Assembly elections. In these elections, the BJP secured 207 seats, while the TMC won 80. Yadav voiced his belief that such intimidation undermines democratic principles, claiming that the Election Commission is biased and acts in concert with the BJP.

“He remarked that if voters are coerced into casting their ballots out of fear, the integrity of the electoral outcome is compromised. His comments further included historical contexts where he claimed the Election Commission had been ineffective, referencing protests orchestrated by his party in opposition to perceived injustices in the electoral process. Yadav indicated a persistent narrative of alleged impropriety linked to the election oversight body.”

Providing statistical evidence, he targeted the patterns of voter behaviour, suggesting manipulation through coercive means. Yadav recalled that his party had observed a trajectory of increasing voter support over the years, while the BJP’s consistency in results has been questioned. He presented specific figures from previous years to illustrate his party’s growing influence in the region.

Investigations into Rath’s Murder Ongoing

The investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath is currently progressing, with local police authorities engaging in a thorough examination of the crime scene. Vidyagar Ajinkya Anant, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer from Barasat Police District, confirmed that authorities are working diligently to uncover further details surrounding the incident. However, he refrained from disclosing specifics at this time, stating that the investigation remains active.”

Chandranath Rath, a former Indian Air Force member and aide to Suvendu Adhikari, was fatally shot on the afternoon of May 3 in Madhyamgram. Law enforcement officials have been working to determine the circumstances leading to Rath’s death and have reportedly recovered a motorcycle associated with the alleged attackers as part of their inquiry.

As pressure mounts on the authorities to resolve this case swiftly, concerns over safety and political violence in West Bengal continue to escalate, drawing attention from various political factions and the general public alike. Yadav’s statements represent a wider call for accountability and assurance of safety within the state’s political framework amid these troubling events.
