The Gujarat Government’s Health Department has taken swift action in response to significant rainfall across the state. A detailed Monsoon Action Plan was put into effect in all 34 districts and eight Municipal Corporations, as reported by the Chief Minister’s office. The proactive measures include regular health assessments for individuals residing in relief camps established for those affected.

Notably, 675 pregnant women from the flood-impacted regions were relocated to healthcare facilities, leading to 272 successful institutional deliveries. The focus on maternal health appears to have been well managed during the adverse weather conditions.

Establishment of Emergency Response Teams

To facilitate immediate healthcare access, 24×7 Health Control Rooms have been introduced at the state level and within each district and municipal corporation. At the district level, Rapid Response Teams and five additional Emergency Medical Teams, complete with dedicated vehicles and personnel, are now operational. This structure aims to enhance the effectiveness of emergency responses during the ongoing weather crisis.

In preparation for emergencies, a fleet of 1,496 ambulances from the 108 Emergency Service, alongside 816 ambulances from Primary Health Centres and Community Health Centres, has been placed on standby. Additionally, essential supplies such as generators and diesel have been arranged to ensure continuity of services at healthcare facilities.

To mitigate the threat of disease outbreaks in the rain-affected zones, the Health Department has instituted 6,868 medical camps, providing examinations and on-the-spot treatment to over 1.74 lakh individuals. Moreover, over 18,000 surveillance teams are performing daily rounds to monitor the situation closely.

Public Health Measures and Surveillance Efforts

The distribution of preventive health resources has been notable, with more than 1.05 crore chlorine tablets and over 10.29 lakh Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets disseminated throughout affected communities. To verify the quality of drinking water, over 10.52 lakh residual chlorine tests have been conducted, with the repair of more than 3,061 drinking water pipeline leaks prioritised.

In terms of emergency preparedness, healthcare institutions have been equipped with approximately 1.5 crore chlorine tablets, over 60 lakh ORS packets, and 1,38,234 Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) injections. These provisions have also been integrated into the 108 ambulances to ensure rapid response for snakebite incidents amidst flooding.

Following the reduction of floodwaters, chemoprophylaxis in the form of Doxycycline has been administered to over 7.61 lakh high-risk individuals in 562 villages across Surat, Tapi, Valsad, and Navsari districts, aimed at preventing leptospirosis. Additionally, 497 extra Vector Control Teams have been established to engage in vector control measures and public awareness initiatives regarding disease prevention.

Continued Public Awareness and Disease Prevention Initiatives

The initial phase of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) has been completed in 106 high-risk villages, while subsequent rounds commenced on August 1. Larvivorous fish have been introduced into 4,998 permanent water bodies as a strategy to manage mosquito populations, thereby preventing breeding.

In collaboration with ASHA workers and Vector Control Teams, the Health Department is actively conducting public educational campaigns aimed at raising awareness about preventing diseases associated with the monsoon season. The state’s health system is reported to be fully equipped to react efficiently to any emerging health issues during this period.
