Four Men Arrested in Delhi for Allegedly Molesting Woman Official

The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman Booth Level Officer (BLO) was allegedly molested during a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi, prompting the police to arrest four men. The incident occurred on July 5 in the Turkman Gate area and has garnered attention following the woman’s formal complaint made on Wednesday.

According to police reports, the victim, who works as a teacher, was in the process of distributing SIR forms when the men began to engage in inappropriate behaviour. The four accused have been identified as Mohammad Sabreen, aged 44, Atiq ur Rehman, aged 58, Mohammad Asif, aged 50, and Mohammad Aftab, aged 44, all of whom are residents of Turkman Gate.

During the incident, one alleged assailant reportedly placed the BLO register on the woman’s lap while signing it, despite her requests for him to refrain from doing so. The complainant also mentioned that the others made derogatory remarks and refused to accept the forms she was distributing.

Police Action and Arrests

After receiving the complaint, authorities swiftly registered a First Information Report (FIR) and initiated an investigation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, Rohit Rajbir Singh, confirmed the arrest of the four men, stating that their actions constituted both molestation and obstruction of the woman in the discharge of her official duties.

Singh detailed that the woman was tasked with distributing SIR forms as part of her responsibilities. When she attempted to conduct her work, she faced inappropriate behaviour from the group, which included obscene comments directed at her. Singh emphasised that such actions are taken seriously and that the arrests highlight the commitment of police to protect public servants.

The police have made it clear that this incident represents a cognisable offence, warranting immediate legal action. Following the formal complaint, the investigation continued to ensure all aspects of the case were thoroughly examined.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Response

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to gather additional evidence and witness testimonies. The local community has expressed concern regarding the safety of women officials while performing their duties, particularly in areas where public interaction is necessary.

In light of this incident, discussions have emerged about enhancing the safety of electoral personnel during exercises like the SIR. Various organisations are advocating for better protective measures, as incidents of harassment in public service roles can undermine the integrity of election processes.

Police officials are committed to ensuring the safety of individuals conducting their professional responsibilities and will take further measures as needed to protect public servants from harassment. The swift action taken in this case serves as a reminder of the seriousness with which the authorities treat such matters.
