The CSR Journal Magazine

Consul General Erik af Hällström has asserted that Finland and India enjoy robust bilateral relations, which hold considerable promise for growth in trade, investment, and strategic collaboration. His remarks came during a discussion on April 16 in Mumbai, where he highlighted the significance of recent high-level meetings between the two nations. The momentum created by Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s visit to India was particularly noted.

During the visit, which occurred last month, President Stubb met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. He participated in the Raisina Dialogue and signed strategic agreements focusing on sustainability and digitalisation. Additionally, his trip included a stop in Mumbai, where he engaged with the Chief Minister, as well as with business leaders and students at Mumbai University.

Hällström emphasised the need to tap into economic opportunities, referring to the current annual trade in ready-made products, which stands at a few billion euros. He indicated that the upcoming Europe-India Free Trade Agreement has the potential to significantly increase this trade, potentially doubling it. Investment also plays a crucial role, with the Consulate General of Finland in Mumbai committed to fostering foreign direct investments in both directions.

Sweden’s Consul General Advocates for Coordination with Maharashtra

Sven Ostberg, the Consul General of Sweden in Mumbai, was recently elected as the dean of the Consular Corps. He articulated his intention to enhance cooperation between foreign missions and the Maharashtra government. Ostberg expressed his commitment to facilitate dialogue and mutual understanding between India and Maharashtra, as well as between Mumbai and the global community.

In addressing Sweden’s economic impact in India, Ostberg highlighted the presence of 280 Swedish companies operating within the country. These companies are significant employers, directly providing jobs for approximately 2 lakh individuals and indirectly supporting around 2 million more. He stated ambitions to increase bilateral trade between Sweden and India by the year 2032.

Additionally, Tomasz Wielgomas, the Vice Dean of the Consular Corps and Consul General of Poland, remarked on the constructive economic relationship between India and Poland. He underscored that the two countries have maintained amicable ties, even as their economies continue to expand, with Poland currently a 1 trillion economy and India exceeding 4 trillion.

Maharashtra’s Role in International Diplomacy Underlined

Maharashtra Minister Jaykumar Rawal pointed out Mumbai’s essential function as a hub for international diplomatic engagement, noting the city’s substantial consular presence. Mumbai serves as India’s economic capital, accommodating around 110 Consuls General, comprising both honorary and career diplomats.

Rawal mentioned that these diplomats are organised under the consular corps and chamber of commerce members, who work together to enhance coordination with the Maharashtra government. He stressed the importance of international collaboration in today’s complex global environment, pointing out that establishing peace and harmony necessitates global cooperation.

As part of this effort, the new installation of Sweden’s Consul General as the head of the Consular Corps aims to reinforce the connections between Maharashtra, India, and the international community. This collaborative initiative provides a platform for industry dialogue and fosters people-to-people connections, ultimately contributing to shared goals in a globally interconnected society.
