Fencing Work Commences Along India-Bangladesh Border in Siliguri Following Land Transfer to BSF

The CSR Journal Magazine

Fencing operations have officially commenced along the India-Bangladesh border in the Phansidewa area of Siliguri subdivision. This development follows the West Bengal government’s decision to transfer 27 kilometres of land to the Border Security Force (BSF). The commencement of this work signifies an important move towards fortifying border security in the region.

Visuals from the border area indicate that construction has begun, with officials seen carrying out essential groundwork. This initiative is anticipated to enhance surveillance capabilities and bolster the security infrastructure along this sensitive international boundary.

Local residents have voiced their relief regarding this measure, which they perceive as a long-delayed response to ongoing security issues in the vicinity. Many inhabitants of the area expressed gratitude for the new government, highlighting their previous fears and concerns about insufficient security.

Community Reactions to Land Transfer and Fencing Work

Local resident Anil Ghosh shared his perspective, stating that the previous lack of security in the region had created a dire situation. He described the atmosphere as distressing, making daily activities like cattle raising feel perilous. Ghosh affirmed that the current improvements contribute not only to the safety of West Bengal but also to the security of India as a whole.

Fellow resident Narayan Saha reiterated the community’s previous struggles. He noted that prior requests for border security were often overlooked. The recent actions by the government led to a sense of liberation among villagers, with many feeling that their pleas for fencing had finally been addressed under the leadership of the new Chief Minister. Saha mentioned that the community now feels more secure and able to live without fear.

Another villager, Shivam Modak, echoed sentiments surrounding national security, welcoming the land transfer. He remarked on the previous uncertainties and dangers faced and expressed relief at the actions now being taken. Modak indicated that the safety improvements are significant for all residents living in border areas, allowing them to feel secure in their everyday lives.

Government Initiatives and Future Plans for Border Fortification

This progress in Siliguri follows an announcement by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, where he confirmed the state’s readiness to allocate land for fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. His announcement included plans for additional land designated for Border Outposts (BOPs) and other BSF facilities, aiming to improve overall security measures.

Adhikari noted that the decision came after renewed collaboration with central agencies, addressing previous delays in land allocation. He also mentioned efforts made during the initial Cabinet meeting to expedite the transfer process, which is to occur within 45 days. Thereafter, the BSF is set to complete the fencing work.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister has publicly criticised the prior Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration for allegedly lacking cooperation in land transfer efforts, claiming this previous inaction had detrimental effects on border security. The current initiatives reflect a decisive turn in the government’s approach to fortifying the international boundary.
