End Of Nitish Era: Samrat Choudhary To Lead Bihar As BJP’s First Chief Minister

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bihar is poised for a significant political transformation as Samrat Choudhary is set to be inaugurated as the state’s 24th chief minister. This marks the first occasion where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold the chief ministerial position in Bihar. The political transition follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, president of the Janata Dal (United) – JD(U), who stepped down from his role after being sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Choudhary, formerly the deputy chief minister, was unanimously elected as the leader of the NDA legislative party during a meeting that included Kumar. Following this, he met with Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to formally request the authority to establish the new government.

Swearing-In Ceremony Scheduled at Lok Bhavan

The oath-taking ceremony is slated for 10:50 am at Lok Bhavan, where Governor Syed Ata Hasnain is expected to administer the oath of office. In addition to Choudhary, two deputy chief ministers, Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, will also take their oaths. Reports indicate that initially only these three leaders will be included in the cabinet, suggesting a smaller government structure that may expand next month. Consequently, 33 ministerial posts will remain unfilled following the ceremony.

The announcement of Choudhary’s leadership was made during an NDA MLAs meeting, where Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar confirmed unanimous support from all legislators. Earlier that day, BJP MLAs had endorsed Choudhary as their legislative party leader, in the presence of notable figures such as central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Choudhary expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their trust in him, stating his commitment to promoting Bihar’s advancement as well as adhering to the BJP’s ideological goals.

Farewell to Nitish Kumar and Emerging Challenges

Nitish Kumar, who has served as Bihar’s chief minister for a record ten terms since 2005, began his last day in office by paying homage to B.R. Ambedkar before convening a farewell cabinet meeting. Following his resignation submitted to the Governor at Lok Bhavan, Kumar expressed his willingness to extend full cooperation and guidance to the upcoming government.

Although Kumar did not address the media directly, he released a statement detailing his tenure and the contributions made during his time as chief minister. His leadership has been marked by numerous achievements and challenges in the political landscape of Bihar.

In a critical remark, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav referred to Choudhary as a “product of Lalu ji’s school” while questioning the legitimacy of the NDA’s mandate. He pointed out that the alliance had contested elections under Kumar’s guidance. Meanwhile, celebrations erupted among BJP leaders and supporters, who hailed Choudhary’s ascension as a historic milestone for the party in Bihar.

Samrat Choudhary, whose political journey began with the RJD before transitioning to the BJP in 2017, had been widely recognised as a likely candidate for the chief ministership following Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha.
