Election Commission Satisfied with Strong Turnout in Phase-I of Bengal Polls, Tight Security in Place

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed satisfaction with the voting trends recorded during the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, citing a strong voter turnout and largely peaceful polling across the state.

Long queues were observed across several polling stations, indicating enthusiastic participation from the electorate in the 152 constituencies going to polls in this phase.

EC reviews ground situation

Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar conducted a telephonic review with State Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal to assess the ongoing polling process.

The discussion centred on voter turnout, security deployment, and responses to scattered complaints of disturbances reported from different districts.

Following the review, the CEO’s office issued urgent instructions to District Election Officers (DEOs) across the state. Agarwal directed that central forces should not remain restricted to the 100-metre radius of polling booths. Instead, they have been asked to intervene wherever necessary to maintain law and order and ensure voter safety.

Enhanced surveillance at sensitive booths

Out of the 44,376 polling booths set up across the state, approximately 15,000 have been categorised as sensitive or critical. These locations are under heightened surveillance through webcasting, drone monitoring, and additional deployment of central security forces.

Officials confirmed that all polling personnel and materials were delivered on time, ensuring smooth commencement of voting.

Isolated complaints under watch

While no major untoward incidents have been officially reported, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and investigating isolated complaints of unrest. The ECI has reiterated its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections.

Implications for upcoming phases

Political observers believe that voter turnout patterns and administrative handling during this phase could influence campaign strategies and electoral approaches in the remaining phases of the election.
