Eggs Rain Down as Police Arrest Former TMC MLA Sujoy Hazra

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a startling incident in Paschim Medinipur, locals reacted with fury as they hurled eggs at a police vehicle transporting former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sujoy Hazra, who was arrested under accusations of extortion and forgery.

On June 6, police officers from Jangipara in Hooghly had reportedly made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing anti-corruption efforts. The arrest of TMC leader Ramesh Patra, alleged to have perpetrated a scam involving substantial sums through fraudulent activities, was a central development. Tanmay Barui, a local businessman, filed a complaint indicating that Patra misappropriated approximately Rs 29 lakh by promising benefits tied to influential political connections.

According to Barui’s account, while involved with the ‘Adra-Bilaspur Cooperative Agricultural Development Society Limited,’ he was misled by Patra, who is reportedly a close associate of former transport minister Snehashish Chakraborty. After collecting money through online transactions and cash payments, Patra allegedly failed to deliver on his promises and resorted to intimidation tactics against Barui.

This incident marks a significant point in the ongoing fight against corruption in the state, leading to rising tensions within the political landscape, further complicated by internal disputes within the TMC itself.

Political Violence Climbs in West Bengal

In a separate yet related incident, TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly assaulted while visiting families impacted by post-poll violence in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. Eyewitnesses claimed that he was attacked using bricks, stones, and eggs, sustaining injuries that he described as an “attempt on his life,” allegedly orchestrated by BJP supporters.

After the attack, five individuals were arrested and presented before the Baruipur court. The accused have been identified as Akash Gayen, Kajal Das, Debashish Dutta, Nirmalya Sengupta, and Tapan Maiti. Banerjee described this incident as “political violence and state-sponsored terrorism” perpetuated by opposition factions. This rising trend of violence paints a grim picture of the current political climate in West Bengal.

In the same vein, MP Kalyan Banerjee reported that he too faced an assault by alleged BJP workers while heading to submit a complaint regarding the ongoing post-poll violence. He termed the incident as an “attempt to murder,” reflecting the growing unease among political leaders in the region.

TMC Faces Internal Challenges Amid External Threats

As the TMC grapples with external pressures, it is also witnessing significant internal strife. Reports have emerged indicating a rebellion involving 58 MLAs who are reportedly rallying behind Ritabrata Banerjee, a leader recently expelled from the party. This upheaval has raised concerns regarding a potential factional split, with speculation that up to 20 Lok Sabha MPs may also consider departing from the TMC.

In an effort to navigate through these tumultuous times, the TMC has initiated a leadership overhaul. Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen have been appointed as Joint Secretaries nationally, while Chandrima Bhattacharya is set to assume leadership roles at the state level, taking over from state head Subrata Bakshi due to health issues.

The series of events unfolding in West Bengal reflects a complex tapestry of political intrigue, corruption, and the quest for power, as various factions within the TMC and opposition jockey for influence in an increasingly fractious atmosphere.
