EAM Jaishankar Meets Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles to Discuss Indo-Pacific and Strategic Relations

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in talks with Richard Marles, the Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, on June 2 in New Delhi. This meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and assess the evolving dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the engagement on social media, reflecting on the importance of the discussions regarding regional developments and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Defence Ministers’ Dialogue

Before meeting Jaishankar, Marles collaborated with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to co-chair the second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. This dialogue served as a platform to evaluate progress in defence cooperation and identify new opportunities for enhancing bilateral relationships. The Ministry of Defence reported that the leaders focused on advancing their strategic partnership further.

Upon arrival, Marles was given a Ceremonial Tri-Service Guard of Honour, signifying the importance of his visit. The discussions underscored a commitment to reinforce defence engagement and build mutual trust between the two nations.

Rajnath Singh later shared insights from the dialogue, indicating a comprehensive review of the existing defence cooperation. He mentioned that the partnership is on track for significant advancements in the coming years, marking a positive outlook for bilateral relations.

Strategic Trust and Practical Cooperation

During the meeting, Marles emphasised the importance of transforming the strategic trust between India and Australia into practical defence cooperation. His comments highlighted the belief that collaboration among nations is crucial for ensuring peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He thanked Singh for hosting the dialogue, noting the collective commitment to enhancing military cooperation.

The Defence Ministry’s statement reiterated the importance of Australia as a key partner in India’s vision for a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific. This visit not only reflects the growing maturity of the defence partnership but also indicates the increasing pace of collaboration between the two nations.
