The United Nations has raised concerns about the expected strengthening of El Nino over the coming months. According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), this phenomenon is projected to escalate into a strong El Nino between August and October 2026. The WMO’s Global Seasonal Climate Update highlights that the impacts of this event could significantly affect weather patterns and temperature levels across various regions worldwide.

The WMO has noted that exceptionally warm ocean temperatures are anticipated to accompany the intensification of El Nino. These changes are likely to lead to shifts in rainfall patterns, which could have serious implications for agriculture, health, and vulnerable communities globally. Governments and humanitarian organisations are being urged to take meaningful actions based on the forecasted climate data.

The Global Impact of El Nino

El Nino is a natural climate pattern characterised by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Although it originates in this specific region, the phenomenon has far-reaching effects, influencing weather systems worldwide by altering atmospheric circulation. The WMO indicates that predictions from major climate centres suggest the average sea surface temperature in significant monitoring areas could exceed 2.9°C during the specified period.

In addition to the expected changes in the Pacific, a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is forecast to occur concurrently. This phase involves the western Indian Ocean becoming warmer than usual while the eastern counterpart cools. This dynamic may further complicate the global climate scenario. Additionally, the tropical Atlantic Ocean is also set to maintain above-average temperatures, contributing to the overall shifts in climate systems.

The ramifications of such climatic alterations could be profound, affecting rainfall and temperature patterns, which are critical for agriculture and food security. Therefore, the global community is faced with the necessity of monitoring and addressing these challenges effectively.

UN Officials Call for Immediate Action

As climate-related risks continue to escalate, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasised the urgency of addressing the situation. He states that El Nino has effectively “entered our home” and is exacerbating a world already struggling with extreme weather events, including record heat and catastrophic wildfires. The rising sea temperatures have added to the gravity of the climate crisis.

Guterres has voiced concerns about the ongoing expansion of fossil fuel usage, arguing that this trend exacerbates climate challenges. He is advocating for immediate measures focusing on both mitigating the impacts of climate events and tackling their underlying causes. This dual approach is imperative for the protection of global populations against the adverse effects of climate change.

Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General, also emphasised that while El Nino is among the most monitored climate events, merely relying on forecasts will not suffice to avert disasters. Timely actions predicated on accurate climate information can empower governments and communities to assess risks, prepare accordingly and lessen the fallout from severe weather conditions. The WMO is enhancing global coordination and climate information services to support nations in preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
