National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has made a passionate call for the youth of India to wholly commit themselves to the process of nation-building. Speaking at the Lokmanya Tilak National Award ceremony in Pune on August 1, Doval remarked on the “rare window of opportunity” currently available in the nation’s history that should not be wasted. He stressed the importance of prioritising the national interest over personal ambitions in order to create a better future for the country.

During his address, Doval articulated that the essence of genuine freedom is rooted in responsibility. He argued that the interests of individual citizens should take a back seat to the overarching needs of the nation. He urged the youth to focus exclusively on national welfare, stating that personal desires can be deferred. “Today’s youth should dedicate themselves completely to the nation,” Doval said. “We cannot afford to let this moment pass us by.” He expressed confidence in the potential for a collective effort that could result in a transformative chapter in India’s history.

Youth and the Meaning of Freedom

In his speech, Doval cautioned the younger generation against misconstruing their contemporary freedoms. He noted that many young people might believe that the current state of India is a long-standing reality. “They might feel that our freedom is merely about personal liberties,” he said, highlighting the sacrifices made by earlier generations for the freedoms enjoyed today. Doval referenced the legacy of Lokmanya Tilak, emphasising the need for youth to awaken to their responsibilities and actively contribute to the nation’s growth.

By modernising Tilak’s slogans for the present context, Doval inspired the youth to consider a mantra focused on national development. He posited that if Tilak were alive today, he might assert something akin to, “Making India strong and developed is my birth-right duty, and I shall do it.” This statement encapsulates the essence of a commitment to nation-building that Doval wishes to instil in the younger population.

Doval also introduced a strategic construct termed “VED analysis,” which stands for Vital, Essential, and Desirable. He articulated the importance of using this framework to guide decision-making. According to Doval, the service of the nation is “Vital,” thus rendering other desires secondary. He urged the youth to assess their goals through this lens, avoiding paths that might conflict with national interests.

Responsibilities of an Independent India

In his closing remarks, Doval reminded his audience that while India is an independent nation, the responsibilities of its citizens—especially the youth—are far from complete. He pointed out that numerous challenges persist, both from within and outside the country. His address served as a reminder of the essential roles that young people must play in addressing these challenges and in forging a stronger nation.

The Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026 was presented to Ajit Doval by Home Minister Amit Shah during the event in Pune. Shah acknowledged the significance of Doval’s contributions to India’s internal and external security, stating that history would reserve “a golden page” for him due to his impactful work in the realm of national security.
