The film Satluj, previously known as Punjab ’95, has finally been made available for streaming after enduring years of censorship challenges. Diljit Dosanjh stars in this poignant piece, which is inspired by the true story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Khalra was instrumental in exposing the alleged unlawful cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab during the militants’ era.

This artistic work is now streaming on ZEE5, following a lengthy period of contention with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board had requested a multitude of edits, reportedly exceeding one hundred changes. These included alterations to the film’s title, references to various locations within Punjab, and modifications to the depiction of Khalra’s character.

The director, Honey Trehan, along with the film’s producers, argued that the narrative is rooted in documented facts, which contributed significantly to the protracted stalemate over its release. Consequently, this conflict also influenced the film’s participation in festivals, as it was withdrawn from the slate at the Toronto International Film Festival just prior to its planned debut.
