Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal has publicly called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in light of recent controversies surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). He expressed concerns regarding Pradhan’s “moral responsibility” to remain in office, highlighting what he views as the government’s failure to safeguard the interests of students. Venugopal articulated that Pradhan’s position has become untenable due to these issues.

Venugopal’s statements were made during an interview with ANI, where he asserted that Pradhan should step down to protect the future of students across the nation. He questioned Pradhan’s ability to effectively communicate with the public under the current circumstances, further emphasising the gravity of the situation for students’ welfare.

Allegations of Incompetence and Indifference

In support of the call for Pradhan’s resignation, Congress General Secretary in-charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, issued a scathing critique of the Minister on social media platform X. Ramesh argued that the call for Pradhan’s resignation is grounded in a series of failures during his time in office, rather than focusing solely on the ongoing NEET controversy. He described Pradhan as “indifferent” and “insensitive,” echoing growing discontent among students and families alike.

Ramesh outlined numerous allegations that have surfaced against the Minister, which include failures by the National Testing Agency (NTA), paper leaks, cancellation of examinations, and rampant irregularities in the procurement processes related to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). He further referenced alleged corruption in various educational institutions under Pradhan’s purview.

Stating that these complaints represent merely “the tip of the iceberg,” Ramesh indicated that further scrutiny of Pradhan’s tenure would follow. He appealed for accountability regarding the myriad of accusations, suggesting that this issue was symptomatic of broader deficiencies within the educational system.

Heightened Protests by Opposition Parties

On July 22, opposition parties ramped up their protests against the central government, claiming that security forces mishandled both students and lawmakers during recent demonstrations. Various opposition leaders coordinated their dissent by donning black attire inside Parliament, symbolising a collective response to what they claim is the government’s inadequate management of recent educational upheavals.

Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain indicated that members of opposing parties would participate in a ‘Black Day’ to voice their discontent over police actions against peaceful student protests. He reiterated the need for open dialogue between the government and student bodies, advocating for a comprehensive overhaul of the education system.

Additionally, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari remarked that the use of police force against demonstrators—specifically during an incident on July 20—was indicative of government overreach. He claimed that lawmakers remained passive while facing an attack orchestrated by unidentified individuals masquerading as security personnel.

Widespread Protests Across the Nation

In the days leading up to these recent events, Congress workers organised demonstrations in several states, expressing outrage over the detention of prominent party members, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Protests were reported in cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Jabalpur, and Bhubaneswar, where participants accused the Centre of suppressing democratic rights.

In a notable demonstration on July 21, Congress leaders marched from Rajaji Marg toward Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding answers regarding the alleged examination paper leak and calling for an end to police violence against student protesters. This movement saw the involvement of several prominent figures from the party, highlighting a continuing commitment to addressing educational issues.

During the protests, several leaders were detained by police, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, who were later released. The Congress party’s strategy continues to focus on accountability and transparency in educational governance, as protests unfold amid increasing scrutiny of government actions.
